Jon Rauch

9/6/2005

The Nationals activated pitcher Jon Rauch from the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday. Rauch was sidelined in May with a torn right labrum, and had surgery on May 31. In order to make room for the 6-foot-11 righthander, the team moved second baseman Junior Spivey from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.

As scheduled, Rauch underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a labrum tear in his pitching shoulder. The Nationals' righthander will begin a rehab program shortly, and the team hopes he can resume throwing in about six weeks. The 26-year-old Rauch has a 1-3 record and 4.00 ERA in eight relief appearances for Washington in 2005.

Rauch will have surgery on his throwing shoulder Tuesday, and the Nationals will have a better sense of when the righthander might be able to pitch again after the procedure. An MRI exam last week appeared to show a torn labrum in his right shoulder, but the severity of the injury is uncertain.

Rauch is expected to miss at least two months after being diagnosed with a labrum tear in his pitching shoulder. The Nationals' righthander, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, will be evaluated over the next several days to determine if surgery is necessary.

Rauch has been recalled from Triple-A New Orleans by the Washington Nationals. The 26-year-old righthander, who takes the roster spot of demoted reliever Joe Horgan, was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a trade last July, and in 11 combined appearances between the two clubs, including four starts, went 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA.

For the time being, Rauch is slated to pitch in long relief, but he could be called upon to make a start or two, especially if Tomo Ohka continues to struggle. In 14.1 innings with the minor league club this season, Rauch went 1-1 and posted a 2.51 ERA.
