Brent Abernathy

8/15/2005

The Minnesota Twins put infielder Juan Castro on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with knee tendinitis, and the team recalled Abernathy to take his roster spot. The 27-year-old infielder was batting .326 with a .388 OBP in 57 games for Triple-A Rochester. In two earlier stints with the Twins this season, Abernathy is 5-for-19 (.263) with a home run in eight games.

With Nick Punto coming off the disabled list Sunday, the Minnesota Twins returned Abernathy to Triple-A Rochester. The 27-year-old Abernathy was 5-for-19 (.263) with a homer in eight games in his tenure with the Twins.

Before Minnesota hosted Tampa Bay on Friday night, the Twins activated Abernathy from the disabled list. The 27-year-old infielder, returning from a shoulder injury, will help a Twins infield decimated by injuries. Abernathy is 5-for-18 (.278) with a homer and two RBI in seven games since he was recalled from the minors on June 1.

Abernathy gained an opportunity to get some playing time when both Minnesota second basemen, Nick Punto and Luis Rivas, landed on the disabled list in recent weeks. Now Abernathy heads to the DL himself with a sore throwing shoulder that he jammed crashing into a wall while chasing after a flyball last Friday. He went 5-for-18 (.278) with a homer in seven games since he was recalled on June 1.

Abernathy seemed destined for backup duty when he was recalled on Wednesday, but with Nick Punto joining Luis Rivas on the disabled list, Abernathy and rookie Luis Rodriguez are in line to share starts at second base.

With Luis Rivas going on the disabled list with an oblique strain on Wednesday, the Minnesota Twins recalled Abernathy to take his place on the 25-man roster. Rivas had been serving in a backup role, and that probably will be Abernathy's fate, despite hitting percentages of .328/.394/.520 at Triple-A Rochester.
