Will Ohman

2/2/2006

Ohman and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a one-year contract Thursday hours before an arbitration hearing. The reported amount of the contract is worth $610,000, although specifics were not disclosed. The left-hander went 2-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 43 1-3 innings pitched for the Cubs last year.

With Chad Fox going on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury, Ohman has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa by the Chicago Cubs as a replacement in the bullpen. The lefthander has appeared in eight games with the minor league club this season, allowing four runs on four hits in 8.2 innings of work. He struck out 12, walked two and held opposing batters to a .138 average.

Fox recently had claimed the Cubs' closer role, so the team will have to look elsewhere to fill the void, possibly even asking LaTroy Hawkins to step back in. Ohman likely won't figure into the mix, as he will be used in middle relief.
