Toby Hall

12/21/2005

Hall resigned with the Devil Rays on Tuesday night as the two sides agreed to a $2.25 million, one-year contract. Hall batted .287 with five homers and 48 RBIs in 135 games last season as Tampa Bay's regular catcher.

Toby Hall has cleared waivers, which could trigger a trade before the August 31 deadline.

Hall produced a disappointing 2004 season, when he neither hit for average nor showed signs of developing into the middle-of-the-order slugger the Tampa Bay Devil Rays had anticipated. At least the Rays' catcher hit for average this April, batting .322, but with only two extra-base hits in 19 games. The good news is, he has shown more power in May, hitting .339 with three doubles, four homers, 11 RBI and a .607 slugging mark in his first 15 games this month.

After going 1-for-4 in Tampa Bay's win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday, Hall has a 10-game hitting streak. In those 10 games, the Rays' catcher is batting .417 (15-for-36) with five doubles, a homer and three RBI.

For the season, Hall is hitting .329 with a homer and four RBI in 26 games.
