Carlos Zambrano

7/21/2006

Zambrano won his seventh straight decision on Thursday, pitching eight innings in a 4-1 victory over the Astros. The Cub's right-hander allowed just one run, two hits and struck out 10 in the victory.

7/3/2006

Zambrano was selected to his second All-Star team Sunday as one of the eight starting pitchers on the National League roster. He is 7-3 with a 3.33 ERA this season.

8/18/2005

Zambrano tossed another gem in Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the Houston Astros, giving up just one earned run on three hits and finishing just two outs shy of going the distance. He struck out 10 and walked three. The Cubs' righthander not only dominated on the mound, but he helped his own cause by belting a solo home run to lead off the third inning. For the season, he is 10-5 with a 3.07 ERA and one complete game in 25 outings.

8/10/2005

Zambrano's tight lower back has responded to treatment over the past couple of days, and barring any last-minute setbacks, he will take the mound against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday as scheduled. The Cubs' righthander was forced to leave his last start after the back acted up in the third inning.

8/8/2005

Zambrano lasted just three innings in Sunday's loss to the New York Mets, leaving in the fourth with tightness in his lower back. The ailment, which has bothered him on and off during his career, according to manager Dusty Baker, is not considered serious at this point. He will be re-evaluated on Monday.

Posting the shortest outing of his major league career in his previous start (1.2 innings), Zambrano returned to form in Tuesday's 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee. The righthander, who was lit up for eight earned runs by the Brewers last week, scattered just three hits over eight shutout innings to notch his fifth win of the 2005 campaign. He struck out six and walked three.

6/23/2005

Zambrano turned in the shortest outing of his major league career, lasting just 1.2 innings before getting the hook in Wednesday's loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs' righthander retired the side in order in the first inning, but got into trouble in the second, allowing a career-high eight earned runs on seven hits and a walk prior to his departure.

6/13/2005

The X-rays of Zambrano's big left toe, which he injured slding into second base on Friday night, came back negative. The Cubs' righthander was feeling better by the end of the weekend, and he is expected to be ready for his next start this Friday. With a 4-3 record and 3.19 ERA in 13 starts, Zambrano should take the hill against New York at Yankee Stadium.

6/11/2005

After giving up four runs in five innings, Zambrano left Saturday's game when he injured the big toe on his left foot sliding into second base. Zambrano tried to throw warmup pitches in the top of the sixth, but felt he could not continue pitching. Zambrano will be taken in for precautionary X-rays.

6/6/2005

Zambrano walked three batters in the first inning of Sunday's matchup with the San Diego Padres, but none failed to score. The Cubs' righthander got back on track following the rough start, surrendering just three hits in seven shutout innings to record the victory. He has allowed only three earned runs over his last 29 innings (four starts), but has just one win to show for it.

6/1/2005

Zambrano allowed just one hit and an unearned run in eight solid innings of work, but did not figure into the decision in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cubs' righthander, who struck out nine batters and walked two, has held opposing teams to a single hit in three different starts this season.

5/18/2005

According to Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild, Zambrano threw in the bullpen on Wednesday as scheduled, and he reported being pain-free. The righthander, who was diagnosed with tennis elbow earlier this week, was scheduled to start against the Chicago White Sox on Friday, but will be pushed back to Saturday instead, purely as a precautionary measure. Veteran Greg Maddux will get the call on Friday.

5/16/2005

An MRI on Zambrano's pitching arm revealed no structural damage, and the Cubs' righthander has been diagnosed with tennis elbow. Zambrano, who left in the fourth inning of Saturday's meeting with the Washington Nationals because of discomfort in his forearm and elbow, will rejoin the team in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. His availabilty for Friday's scheduled start against the Chicago White Sox will be determined after he throws a side session on Wednesday.

Zambrano hopes to be ready for Friday, but a decision won't be made until the team sees how he responds to Wednesday's side session. For now, consider him as day-to-day. In eight starts this season, Zambrano is 3-2 with a 4.09 ERA and one complete game. He has 46 strikeouts and 19 walks in 50.2 innings of work.

Zambrano, who left his start on Saturday after reporting discomfort in his right elbow and forearm during the fourth inning, is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. The righthander and the Cubs are not overly concerned at this point, and have initially diagnosed the problem as tennis elbow. Zambrano has indicated that he plans to be ready for his next outing, scheduled for Friday against the White Sox.

5/15/2005

In Saturday night's loss to the Nationals, Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano was forced to leave the game in the fourth inning with stiffness in his right forearm, now diagnosed to be tennis elbow. The righthander had been perfect through the first three innings, but gave up four runs before departing midway through the fourth inning. This is the second time Zambrano has been removed from a game this season due to this type of injury. Consider him day-to-day.

Although this has happened before, Zambrano is a surprisingly durable pitcher, and should be able to get past this setback. He has not been ruled out of his next start as of yet.

5/9/2005

In Sunday's victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, Zambrano notched his first complete game of the 2005 campaign, despite needing 136 pitches to do so. The Cubs' righthander allowed just one run -- a homer by Bobby Abreu in the sixth inning -- on five hits. He struck out five and walked three.

Zambrano isn't the most consistent pitcher, but he has the ability to work deep into games and normally posts high strikeout totals. In seven starts this season, he is 3-1 with a 3.61 ERA, including 42 strikeouts and 19 walks in 47.1 innings.

4/27/2005

Zambrano lasted just 4.2 innings in Tuesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, as he was ejected for hitting outfielder Austin Kearns with a pitch following an Adam Dunn home run. The Cubs' righthander allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks prior to his departure and said the blister on his right index finger affected his control. He struck out five.

Zambrano could face a suspension for his actions in Tuesday's game. He will continue to receive treatment on the blister, and hopes to avoid missing any starts. For the season, Zambrano is 2-0 with a 4.31 ERA in five outings.

4/26/2005

The blister on the index finger of Zambrano's pitching hand has improved significantly over the past several days, according to Cubs manager Dusty Baker, and he will take the mound against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday night, as scheduled. The righthander nearly went the distance in last Wednesday's victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, but left after pitching a solid 8.2 innings when the blister developed.

Obviously, the training staff will keep an eye on Zambrano's finger as the game goes on, but at this point, it does not appear that the blister will be a problem. In four outings this season, Zambrano is 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA, striking out 22 batters and walking nine in 26.2 innings of work.

4/21/2005

Zambrano nearly went the distance in Wednesday's victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, but left after pitching a solid 8.2 innings, due to a blister on the index finger of his pitching hand. Prior to his departure, the Cubs' righthander allowed just one run -- a solo home run by Albert Pujols -- on five hits. He struck out three and walked one.

After the game, Zambrano said his finger is sore, but he expects to be ready for his next start. He'll receive treatment and be evaluated on a daily basis. In four outings this season, Zambrano is 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA, striking out 22 batters and walking nine in 26.2 innings of work.
