Juan Pierre

7/5/2006

Pierre went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored in the Cubs' 7-2 loss to Houston on Tuesday. The Chicago center fielder has 13 hits in his last five games and is batting .591 over that span.

2/2/2006

The Chicago Cubs and Pierre agreed to a one-year contract Thursday worth a reported $5.75 million. Acquired from the Marlins on Dec. 7, Pierre is expected to replace Corey Patterson, who was traded to Baltimore in January, in the outfield and bat at the top of the order for the Cubs.

12/7/2005

The Florida Marlins have traded Pierre to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-hander Sergio Mitre and minor league pitchers Renyel Pinto and Ricky Nolasco. The 28-year-old outfielder, who boasts a .305 career batting average, hit .276 with two home runs, 47 RBI and 57 stolen bases in 2005. He has not missed a game in three years.

Pierre became the fourth member of the 50-steals club for 2005, swiping his 50th on Tuesday night in Florida's 4-2 win over Houston. It marked the second time in five full seasons in the majors that the Marlins' center fielder reached the 50 plateau. He set a career high with 65 in 2003, and he's averaged nearly 51 a year in his five full seasons since 2001.

The Florida Marlins are hoping Pierre's performance in Wednesday's meeting with the Arizona Diamondbacks is a sign that he is coming out of his recent slump. The outfielder went 2-for-4 wtih a walk, two stolen bases and three runs scored -- his best stat line in more than two weeks. Going into Wednesday's contest, Pierre was just 7-for-62 (.113) in his previous 15 games.

5/20/2005

Since going 5-for-5 against Colorado on May 8, Pierre has managed just five hits in 35 at-bats. That's a .143 average over a nine-game span, and the Marlins' center fielder has scored just four runs and driven in two during his slide. His on-base percentage in those nine games is .231.

5/9/2005

After notching just four hits in his previous 29 at-bats, Pierre got back on track by going 5-for-5 with an RBI, run scored and three stolen bases in Sunday's loss to the Colorado Rockies. With his performance, the Marlins' outfielder tied a franchise record for hits in a single game.

Fantasy owner have to be elated with Pierre's baserunning on Sunday. Recording 45 or more stolen bases each of the past four seasons, Pierre had just two on the year going into Sunday's game. It appears he has fully recovered from the calf injury that limited him in spring training and early in the season.

4/9/2005

After missing most of spring training with a calf muscle injury, Pierre was not in the Marlins' starting lineup Saturday, ending his streak of 299 consecutive starts. Jack McKeon said the move was made simply to give the outfielder a day off. In 2004, Pierre became just the third player in major league history to play every inning for his team.
