Joel Pineiro

7/8/2005

Pineiro went the distance in a 10-2 victory over the Angels Thursday night, limiting them to six hits for his first win since April 26. He is now 3-4 for the year, with a 5.44 ERA in 15 starts.

After getting roughed up in his two previous starts -- leading to a 10-day minor league stint spent with Mariners pitching coach Bryan Price to work on his mechanics -- Pineiro returned on Tuesday and worked 5.1 innings against the Orioles in Baltimore. He allowed five hits and just one run, but he walked four while striking out three.

The Mariners have optioned pitcher Joel Pineiro to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. On Friday night, the righthander gave up six runs and eight hits in 3.2 innings against Boston. Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said that Pineiro would spend 10 days working on his mechanics before he is brought back on May 24 to pitch against Baltimore.

Although it's not permanent, fantasy owners should get Pineiro out of their lineups for next week, and keep a close eye on him even when he returns in late May. In six starts this season, the six-year veteran is 2-3 with a 6.52 ERA. Relief pitcher Julio Mateo will take Pineiro's spot in the rotation for the time being.

As anticipated, Pineiro has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Seattle Mariners. The righthander, who was limited in spring training by stiffness in his pitching shoulder, is scheduled to make his season debut in Friday's matchup with the Chicago White Sox. Infielder Justin Leone was optioned to Tacoma to open a spot on the 25-man roster.

Pineiro made his last minor league rehab outing at Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, allowing one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk in seven innings. Last year, he was 6-11 with a 4.67 ERA and one complete game in 21 starts, but missed some time with elbow issues.

On Sunday, Pineiro made an impressive Triple-A start for Tacoma, allowing one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk in seven innings. The Seattle righthander threw 93 pitches in his pain-free start.

With his shoulder ailment behind him, Pineiro is on track to make his 2005 Mariners debut on Saturday in Chicago against the White Sox.
