Mark Buehrle

7/3/2006

Chicago's Buehrle was selected to his third All-Star team on Sunday as a starting pitcher for the American League. Buehrle is 9-5 with a 3.86 ERA this season.

For the fifth straight season, Buehrle will get the Opening Day start for the White Sox. The Chicago lefthander, who has worked at least 32 starts and 220 innings in each of the last five years, gets the nod after going 16-8 with a career-best 3.12 ERA in 33 outings in 2005. Chicago's opener is April 2 against Cleveland.

Buehrle went the distance and earned the "W" in the Chicago White Sox' Game 2 victory in the ALCS on Wednesday. The Sox' lefthander allowed just five hits and a run, and needed just 99 pitches to claim the 2-1 win over the Angels. Buehrle's fine effort was overshadowed by the controversial call that decided the game in the ninth inning.

7/27/2005

Buehrle went six innings against the Kansas City Royals, the 49th consecutive start he has gone that far, and the longest such streak since Steve Carlton went six deep 69 straight times from 1979 to 1982. However, the Royals peppered him for eight hits and seven runs to beat the White Sox for the first time since October 2 last year, ending an 11-game losing streak.

On Tuesday, Buehrle was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for the month of June. The White Sox lefthander went 3-0 in the month with league low 0.96 ERA through five starts. Buehrle also threw a career best 25 consecutive scoreless innings during the month, including a shutout of the Dodgers on June 17. In 17 starts this season the Chicago ace is 10-2 with a 2.58 ERA, and has been named to the 2005 American League All-Star team.

In Tuesday's 2-1 win over Detroit, Buehrle worked his 10th straight quality start and claimed his ninth straight victory. The 26-year-old southpaw went 6.2 frames and limited the Tigers to one run, upping his record to 10-1 with a 2.42 ERA.

6/22/2005

Buehrle tossed eight solid innings in Wednesday's victory over the Kansas City Royals, surrendering just one unearned run on five hits. The White Sox' lefthander struck out six and walked one to win his eighth consecutive decision, a career best.

4/17/2005

With help from two home runs from Paul Konerko, Buehrle was a winner in one of the best pitching performances of his career. The White Sox' lefthander recorded a single-game high of 12 strikeouts en route to his 16th career complete game. Buehrle allowed just three hits -- all to Ichiro -- and the Mariners scored their only run in the ninth when their leadoff man tripled and scored on Adrian Beltre's groundout.

Buehrle needed just 106 pitches and 99 minutes to shut down Seattle. After the game, he said he was locating his fastball as successfully as he ever has.

4/4/2005

Buehrle got the White Sox off to a good start, pitching a gem in Monday's 1-0 Opening Day victory over the Cleveland Indians. The lefthander scattered two hits over eight scoreless innings, striking out five batters and walking one.

Obviously, Buehrle is having no problems with the foot injury he suffered while shagging fly balls a couple of weeks ago. He should get more run support from the White Sox' offense as the season goes on, but if he continues to turn in performances like Monday's, he won't need it. Last season, he was 16-10 with a 3.89 ERA and four complete games in 35 starts.
