Wily Mo Pena

7/18/2006

The Red Sox activated Pena from the 15-day disabled list in time for Tuesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals.

5/31/2006

Pena will have surgery on his left wrist on Thursday after an examination on Tuesday showed an injury to the hamate bone. He went on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, retroactive to Saturday.

5/28/2006

Pena was added to the 15-day disabled list by the Red Sox on Sunday, due to a left wrist injury. The move creates a roster spot for Coco Crisp, who is coming off the disabled list.

The Cincinnati Reds and Pena agreed to a one-year deal Sunday. The right-handed-hitting outfielder, who turns 24 on Jan. 23, batted .254 with 19 home runs and 51 RBIs in 99 games last season. While Pena has shown good power since joining the Reds in 2002, he struck out 116 times in 311 at-bats in 2005. He drew just 20 walks.

Pena hyperextended his lower back when he crashed into the wall diving for Bill Hall's line drive in the fourth inning of Cincinnati's 11-4 win over Milwaukee. Pena hit his head and left shoulder and remained on the ground for five minutes before getting up. The Reds' outfielder was taken off the field on a cart.

Pena reached base in four of his five plate appearances in Sunday's win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Both of the outfielder's hits were three-run home runs, giving him a career-high six RBI. Pena now has six multihomer games in his major league career.

7/5/2005

Pena extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games, going 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 11-10 win over the San Francisco Giants. During the streak, the Reds' outfielder is 13-for-41 (.317) with two doubles, three homers and eight RBI.

Pena has finished up his minor league rehab assignment and been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Cincinnati Reds. The outfielder, who has been sidelined for nearly a month with a strained left quadriceps muscle, likely will be in the starting lineup for Tuesday's matchup with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Fellow outfielder Jason Romano was designated for assignment to make room on the roster.

6/4/2005

Pena, sidelined with a strained left quadriceps muscle, says that he expects his rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A Louisville Bats to come to an end Monday and hopes to be ready to play with Cincinnati on Tuesday. The outfielder is hitting .385 with one home run and four RBI in four games with Louisville. Before going on the disabled list, Pena was hitting .313 with six homers and 12 RBI for the Reds in 2005.

5/27/2005

Pena is expected to expand his workouts over the weekend, and if no problems are reported, he could be sent on a minor league rehab assignment as early as next week. The Reds' outfielder, who has been sidelined since May 2 with a strained left quadriceps muscle, is scheduled to test out the leg on Friday by running the bases.

5/20/2005

Despite some buzz to the contrary, Pena is not ready to come off the disabled list this weekend. A quadriceps injury is difficult to forecast, and it remains uncertain when Pena will be ready to return to the Cincinnati Reds' outfield. He has been on the DL since May 9, retroactive to May 3.

5/10/2005

Due to lingering problems with his strained left quadriceps muscle, Pena has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Cincinnati Reds, retroactive to May 3. The outfielder, who originally suffered the injury on April 23, tried to return after about a week's absence, but aggravated the problem and has landed on the shelf as a result. He will be replaced on the roster by infielder William Bergolla.

Pena's absence should lead to more regular playing time for Austin Kearns in right field. The two have been splitting the duties most of the season. In 19 games, Pena is batting .313 with six home runs and 12 RBI, but he's also struck out 16 times in 48 at-bats.

4/30/2005

Sidelined by a quadriceps injury, Pena ran pain-free on Friday and could be ready to return to the Cincinnati lineup as early as Sunday. Pena was injured in last Saturday's game against the Florida Marlins.

4/23/2005

Pena was forced to leave Saturday's game against the Marlins with stiffness in his left quadriceps muscle. The Reds' outfielder limped off in the second inning, and although the injury doesn't seem serious, Austin Kearns should see more at-bats in his absence.

4/21/2005

Deciding to give Ken Griffey the day off, the Cincinnati Reds used Pena in center field for Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The move payed off, as the outfielder went 2-for-4 and belted two home runs. He hit a solo homer to left-center in the fourth inning before connecting for a two-run shot in the seventh.

Pena has hit safely in five consecutive contests. For the season, he is batting .353 with five home runs and 10 RBI in just 34 at-bats. If he continues to produce those types of numbers, it will be hard to keep him out of the lineup. Pena will split time in right with Austin Kearns and will get the nod in center when Griffey needs a rest.
