Luis Matos

7/7/2006

Matos was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Thursday. The 27-year-old outfielder spent two weeks on the disabled list this season with inflammation in his right shoulder. He was hitting .207 with two homers and five RBIs in 55 games.

The Baltimore Orioles placed Javy Lopez on the 15-day disabled list Friday and filled his roster spot by activating Matos from the DL. Matos has been sidelined since April 16 with an inflamed right shoulder. He's batting .138 with two homers and two RBIs in nine games.

Matos and the Baltimore Orioles came to terms on a one-year, $1,625,000 deal Friday. That's a raise of $500,000 over 2005, when the outfielder batted .280 with four homers and 32 RBIs in 121 games.

The Orioles activated Matos from the disabled list on Saturday. Matos, who injured his right ring finger on May 10, will return as the starting center fielder on Sunday. Utility man David Newhan was sent to the minors to make room on the roster for Matos.

Matos has been out since May 10 after fracturing his right ring finger while attempting to lay down a bunt against the Minnesota Twins. The Orioles' center fielder got the stitches taken out of his finger on Wednesday, but he is believed to be a couple of weeks away from returning.

Baltimore team doctors are all but certain that Matos will not need surgery for the fractured right ring finger he suffered on May 10. If the Orioles' center fielder avoids surgery, he could return as soon as three weeks. A more specific timetable may be known after Matos is re-examined in about a week.

5/11/2005

Matos suffered a broken right ring finger when he was struck by a pitch while trying to bunt in Baltimore's Monday night loss to Minnesota. The Orioles' center fielder is expected to miss at least six weeks of action. He was batting .289 with a .377 on-base percentage and 19 runs scored in 32 games.

Matos joins Sammy Sosa on the DL, leaving the Orioles light on outfielders. Jay Gibbons and B.J. Surhoff will see more playing time, but it's Larry Bigbie and Mark Newhan who could get most of the at-bats in center field for Matos.
