Scott Podsednik

5/15/2006

On Monday afternoon, Podesednik hit his first home run since Game 2 of the World Series. The White Sox left fielder started the season batting .079, but after a 6-for-13 series against the Kansas City Royals from April 17-19, seems to have turned things around and is currently hitting .300. He was 3-for-4 on Monday against the Minnesota Twins.

Podsednik has been bothered by a left groin strain, and the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the injury may keep the White Sox's left fielder from playing in the season opener Sunday night against Cleveland. Manager Ozzie Guillen has Pablo Ozuna and Rob Mackowiak as options in left, so the manager isn't inclined to rush Podsednik back into action. "I'd rather lose him for a couple of days, not 15 to 20 days," Guillen told the Tribune.

Podsednik, who has been slowed by a sore left shoulder this spring, returned to action in a minor league game on Monday. The White Sox's left fielder went 1-for-5 with a home run and a stolen base, according to the Chicago Daily Herald. "The shoulder felt great, so it was a good day," Podsednik told the newspaper. It was his first game action since March 6.

Podsednik, who has been slowed by a sore left shoulder, had a second MRI exam on Monday. The White Sox's outfielder will visit with a specialist Wednesday, though the injury doesn't appear to be serious. Unless a significant injury is identified, it's possible Podsednik will return to game action for the first time since March 6 later this week. Results of both examinations are expected on Wednesday.

Podsednik failed to homer in 568 plate appearances during the regular season, but his second dinger of the playoffs in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday night gave the Chicago White Sox a 7-6 walkoff victory in Game 2 of the World Series. He connected off Houston closer Brad Lidge with one out to break a 6-6 tie.

The Chicago White Sox activated Podsednik from the disabled list Monday. The White Sox' left fielder had been sidelined since August 12 with a strained left groin. The major leagues' stolen-base leader returns with a .282 average, .348 on-base percentage and 54 stolen bases in 99 games.

Podsednik was able to take part in batting practice on Friday, but is still not running. The outfielder, on the 15-day disabled list with a strained abductor muscle, is not expected back until the end of August, at the earliest.

8/15/2005

On Monday afternoon, the Chicago White Sox placed Podsednik on the 15-day disabled list and recalled top prospect Brian Anderson from Triple-A Charlotte. The White Sox' starting left fielder will be out with a strained abductor muscle in his left leg. The muscle helps pull the leg toward the center of the body. He had a similar problem with his right adductor in April. Podsednik went on the DL retroactive to August 13.

8/14/2005

Podsednik will be out of the starting lineup for the second straight game today when the White Sox face the Boston Red Sox this afternoon. He has been suffering from a strained left groin, which could possibly land him on the 15-day disabled list.

Podsednik stole his major league-leading 17th base on Monday, in the Chicago White Sox' 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay. The Sox' left fielder maintains a significant lead in steals, with the 12 steals by Baltimore's Brian Roberts and the Angels' Chone Figgins ranking second in the majors.

Podsednik managed 70 steals with a .244 batting average in 2004. This year he's hitting .253. What is different about his 2005 performance is his walk rate. He already has 19 walks, good for a .374 on-base percentage. While his batting average has yet to approach the .314 mark he posted in his outstanding rookie season in 2003, his .374 OBP is not far off his .379 mark as a rookie.

5/8/2005

Podsednik posted the majors' first four-steal game of the 2005 season in the White Sox' 10-7 victory over the Blue Jays on Saturday. The left fielder singled, walked twice and scored three runs. It marked just the second time in his career that Podsednik stole four bases in a game.

Podsednik currently leads the majors with 16 steals on the season, while being caught just twice.

4/18/2005

Podsednik now has missed five straight games while nursing a minor groin injury, but he could be back in the lineup Monday night, when the White Sox host the opener of a two-game set with divisional rival Minnesota. The speedy left fielder is hitting .280 with a .333 OBP in seven games this season.

4/15/2005

Bothered by a right groin injury in recent days, Podsednik is no sure thing for the White Sox' Friday night contest against Seattle. He would miss his third straight game with the injury. The White Sox will be conservative in returning Podsednik to the lineup, considering how important his legs are to his game.

4/14/2005

Podsednik, who strained his right groin on a steal attempt on Monday, sat out Wednesday's White Sox win over Cleveland and will miss Thursday's series finale as well. On Wednesday, the Sox' left fielder said he was feeling much better, but the White Sox will be conservative with their speedster. The soonest he will return to the lineup is Friday, when Chicago returns home to host Seattle.

A conservative approach with a groin injury this early in the season makes sense, especially for a guy like Podsednik, who depends on his wheels to be effective.

4/13/2005

Podsednik left Chicago's 2-1 win over Cleveland Monday night with a strained right groin muscle. The day off on Tuesday was a plus for the White Sox, but it remains uncertain if the Sox' leadoff hitter will be available for Wednesday night's contest in Cleveland.

Podsednik is expected to be a key part of Chicago's rebuilt offense. He and the other tablesetters need to get on base regularly to make it go.
