Derrick Turnbow

7/3/2006

Turnbow was selected to his first All-Star team Sunday as one of the four relief pitchers on the National League roster. He is 4-4 with 23 saves and a 4.04 ERA this season.

Turnbow and the Brewers agreed to a $6.5 million, three-year contract on Sunday. The contract replaces the $488,000, one-year deal the 28-year-old right-hander signed in February. Turnbow tied Milwaukee's single-season save record with 39 last year, his first as the full-time closer. He also went 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA and struck out a career-high 64 batters.

Turnbow will be the pitcher the Brewers turn to in most save opportunities going forward, as Mike Adams struggled in the closer role over the first few weeks of the 2005 campaign. Turnbow has notched the save in each of his last two appearances, tossing 2.1 hitless innings.

For the season, Turnbow is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA and two saves, but he has not allowed a hit in his last five outings (6.1 innings). He has seven strikeouts and six walks in 9.2 innings overall.

The Milwaukee Brewers have used various different relievers to close out games, and a full-time closer has yet to be named. Turnbow got the call in Sunday's win over the San Francisco Giants, and he did not disappoint. The righthander did not allow a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out two and walking one en route to notching the first save of his major league career.

Although Mike Adams was the leading candidate coming out of spring training, Turnbow, Ricky Bottalico and Jorge de la Rosa also could figure into the mix going forward. In seven appearances this season, Turnbow is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA.
