John Patterson

7/20/2006

The Nationals announced Thursday that Patterson had successful exploratory surgery on his right forearm.

7/19/2006

Patterson will undergo exploratory surgery on his right forearm Thursday and will likely miss the rest of the season, Nationals manager Frank Robinson said. The 28-year-old right-hander, who has been on the disabled list twice this season, is 1-2 with a 4.43 ERA in eight starts. "I don't think there is very much he can do to try to come back," Robinson said following the Nationals' 1-0 loss Wednesday to Florida.

Patterson was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama Monday for the forearm pain that has sidelined him. The Washington right-hander was given an injection to treat what was diagnosed as tendinitis in his right forearm.

5/8/2006

Patterson continues to be bothered by forearm pain, and the Washington right-hander probably won't pitch for another week. He hasn't pitched since April 21 against Atlanta, and he went on the 15-day disabled list roughly a week later. "It's not getting worse, but the soreness is not going away," said Patterson, who is unable to do his rehab work.

4/28/2006

After missing his last start with a forearm strain, Patterson went on the 15-day disabled list Friday. The right-hander has pitched effectively for Washington -- allowing just 22 baserunners and striking out 32 in 25 2-3 innings -- but his forearm ailment has been an issue since early in the season. Manager Frank Robinson wants him to be healthy the next time he takes the mound.

4/6/2006

Patterson experienced tightness in his right forearm during Washington's 9-5 10-inning win over the New York Mets Wednesday. The Nationals' starter allowed four hits (including two homers), three walks and four earned runs over four innings. He struck out seven.

9/13/2005

Patterson has been scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday because of a sinus infection. The Washington righthander will be replaced by a string of relievers at Shea Stadium, according to Nationals manager Frank Robinson. Patterson is expected to take his next turn on Friday in San Diego.

8/5/2005

Patterson was at his best in Thursday's 7-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, notching the first complete game shutout of his major league career. The Nationals' righthander allowed just four hits, struck out a personal-best 13 and did not walk a batter. Over his last six starts (44 innings), Patterson has given up just five earned runs.

7/25/2005

Due to a lack of run support, Patterson did not figure into the decision in Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Houston Astros, despite turning in one of his best performances of the 2005 campaign. The Nationals' righthander allowed just one run on six hits over eight innings, striking out a career-high 10. He did not walk a batter.

7/20/2005

Patterson turned in his best performance of the 2005 campaign and notched his first win since June 11 in Tuesday's 4-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The Nationals' righthander scattered just three hits over eight scoreless innings, struck out eight and walked two. He has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last five starts.

5/30/2005

Patterson will be activated from the disabled list and start for Washington on Tuesday, when the Nationals face the Atlanta Braves at RFK Stadium. The 27-year-old righthander had been out with a back ailment. He is 2-1 with a 2.98 ERA in seven starts this season.

5/25/2005

Patterson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Washington Nationals, retroactive to May 6. On Monday, the Nationals' righthander needed an IV while receiving treatment on ailing back, and the IV inflamed a vain in his arm and aggravated his wrist. He was scheduled to start on Wednesday, but Claudio Vargas will get the nod instead.

5/24/2005

Not only is Patterson battling back problems, but he's also nursing stiffness in his right wrist as well. On Monday, the Nationals' righthander needed an IV while receiving treatment on back, and the IV inflamed a vain in his arm and aggravated his wrist. As a result, he will not take the mound on Wednesday as had been scheduled, and a timetable for his return has not been set.

5/21/2005

Patterson, who is battling a sore back, will miss his scheduled start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. The pitcher said that he should be able to make his next start, which would be Wednesday.

5/19/2005

Patterson is battling some minor soreness in his lower back, and as a precautionary measure, he will be skipped this time through the Nationals' starting rotation. The righthander, who was scheduled to take the mound against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, will be replaced by Claudio Vargas. He will continue to receive treatment on a daily basis.

4/21/2005

Despite another solid outing, Patterson did not figure into the decision in Thursday's loss to the Atlanta Braves. The Nationals' righthander allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings prior to be lifted in favor of reliever Hector Carrasco. In three starts this season, Patterson has allowed just two runs over 21 innings, striking out 17 batters and walking four.

The Nationals might have a tough decision to make when Tony Armas returns from his nagging groin injury. Patterson or Zach Day will be forced to move to the bullpen to open a spot in the rotation.
