Lance Carter

1/15/2006

The Los Angeles Dodgers strengthened their bullpen by acquiring Carter and fellow reliever Danys Baez from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Saturday for two pitching prospects. Carter, who signed a 2006 contract in December, had an off year for the Devil Rays in 2005. He was 1-2 with a save and a 4.89 ERA that was his worst among his three full seasons in the majors.

Carter signed a one-year contract with the Devil Rays on Wednesday. The terms of the deal were not announced. Carter was 1-2 with one save and a 4.89 ERA in 39 games for Tampa Bay last season. The reliever split time between the Devil Rays and Triple-A Durham.

Carter will make an unanticipated trip to Durham after the Tampa Bay Devil Rays demoted him to the minors on Friday. Carter, who opened the 2004 season as the Rays' closer, departs with a 1-2 record a save and a 5.16 ERA in 35 games this season. Since the start of June, the 30-year-old righthander has posted a 7.13 ERA and .314 opponent batting average in 15 appearances.

After his hearing with MLB administrator John McHale, Carter's suspension for his role in the late-April beanball fiasco between Boston and Tampa Bay was reduced from five games to three games. The Rays' reliever will begin serving his suspension on Tuesday, when his team plays the Reds in Cincinnati.

Carter was suspended for five games on Friday for his role in the bench-clearing incident between Tampa Bay and Boston last weekend. The Rays' reliever nearly beaned Manny Ramirez before the Boston star homered in the seventh inning of last Sunday's contest. Then, Carter almost hit Ortiz in the head, causing both benches to clear.

All four players who were issued suspensions were fined an undisclosed amount of money as well. The suspensions are to begin on Friday, but the players can file an appeal, which would allow them to continue playing until their appeal has been heard.
