On Sunday, Gonzalez played in his first game since April 9. The Nationals catcher was 3-for-5.

The Seattle Mariners optioned Gonzalez to Triple-A Tacoma Friday and recalled catcher Miguel Ojeda. Gonzalez has batted .267 (12-for-45) for the Mariners this season, scoring seven runs in 14 games. He and Yorvit Torrealba have shared catching duties since the Mariners engineered two trades involving catchers before the July 31 trade deadline. Ojeda was acquired from San Diego at that time.

Gonzalez has a partial tear of his left hamstring and is expected to be out at least three weeks. That's not exactly news worthy of a birthday for the veteran catcher, who turns 31 on Tuesday. Recalled by Seattle on May 5, Gonzalez was in the course of taking over starting catcher duties by going 6-for-16 (.375) with four doubles in his first four games.

The Seattle Mariners placed Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, a day after he suffered a strained left hamstring. The veteran catcher, who turns 31 on Tuesday, had all but taken over starting catcher duties for the Mariners. He was 6-for-16 (.375) with four doubles and two RBI since he was recalled on May 5.

The Mariners recalled catching prospect Rene Rivera from Double-A San Antonio on Sunday, but he will serve as a backup. Miguel Olivo will assume the starting job once again.

After being slated as the new starting catcher in Seattle, Gonzalez went down on Saturday with a fairly signifcant strain. Chances are he'll be sent to the disabled list, and Miguel Olivo will return to the Mariners' starting lineup.

In his first major league appearance in nearly two years Sunday, Gonzalez started behind the plate for the Seattle Mariners and went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. After the game, Mariners manager Mike Hargrove suggested that Gonzalez might be ripe for more starting assignments, in light of the struggles of starting catcher Miguel Olivo.

Gonzalez wasn't exactly ripping it up at Triple-A Tacoma before his recall, batting .271 with two homers and six RBI in 16 games. It's hard to anticipate that Gonzalez would have serious fantasy value as Seattle's starting catcher, but if he keeps hitting he should keep playing for the foreseeable future.

5/5/2005

After Seattle catcher Dan Wilson blew out a knee on Wednesday night, the Mariners have recalled Gonzalez from Triple-A Tacoma. The 30-year-old catcher will assume Wilson's duties as the backup to starting catcher Miguel Olivo. Gonzalez was hitting .271 with two homers and six RBI in 16 games for Tacoma.
