Matt Herges

6/26/2005

Herges cleared waivers late last week and accepted a Triple-A assignment to Tucson. He'll remain in the Arizona system after allowing 12 earned runs over eight innings with the Diamondbacks following a June 3 trade from San Francisco. The 35-year-old righthander didn't fare much better with the Giants this season, going 1-1 with a 4.71 ERA in 21 relief appearances.

The Arizona Diamondbacks designated Herges for assignment on Saturday. This is the second time this year that the veteran reliever has been designated for assignment. He was traded from San Francisco to Arizona earlier this month, just days after the Giants had designated him. The reliever appeared in seven games with Arizona, posting a 13.50 ERA.

The San Francisco Giants have traded Herges to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league outfielder Doug DeVore. The veteran reliever, who was designated for assignment last weekend, is expected to join the Diamondbacks in time for Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. A corresponding move will be made at that time to make room on the roster.

In order to make room for the recently acquired LaTroy Hawkins, the Giants designated Herges for assignment.

Armando Benitez' hamstring injury is more serious than originally thought, and the veteran closer is expected to be sidelined about four months. According to Giants' manager Felipe Alou, the team likely will turn to Herges and Jeff Fassero in most save situations during Benitez' absence. In nine relief appearances this season, Herges is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA.

With Robb Nen sidelined last season, Herges was called upon to close games for San Francisco. He held the role most of the year, going 4-5 with a 5.23 ERA and 23 saves.

Armando Benitez will miss at least the next two weeks after being placed on the disabled list on Wednesday. As a result, Herges is expected to step in and serve as the Giants' primary closer in Benitez absence. Jim Brower and Jeff Fassero also could get the call in certain situations. In nine relief appearances this season, Herges is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA.
