Chris Woodward

7/6/2005

Woodward was back in the Mets' starting lineup on Tuesday despite having his knee drained after fouling a ball of his leg the previous night. However, the utilityman probably should have taken the evening off, as he went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts prior to being lifted in favor of Brian Daubach.

Woodward had fluid drained from his left knee after fouling a ball off his leg in the seventh inning of Monday's game against the Washington Nationals. Precautionary X-rays were negative, and the Mets have listed the utilityman as day-to-day. Woodward was 0-for-3 with a strikeout prior to his departure, dropping his season batting average to .320 in 103 at-bats (40 games).

Woodward could be the Mets' starting second baseman on Friday night, when New York opens a weekend series with Seattle. The utilityman could get the call after Kaz Matsui injured his left knee on the final play of Thursday night's win over Oakland. The Mets already are without Miguel Cairo, who went on the disabled list with a strained hamstring on Tuesday.
