David Newhan

4/21/2006

Newhan underwent surgery in Baltimore on Thursday for the fractured right fibula he suffered Monday night while stealing second base. The Baltimore Sun reports that he had a torn deltoid ligament, but ligament and muscle damage was far less severe than feared. Orioles trainer Richie Bancells said Newhan, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Wednesday, will be in a splint for two weeks and is expected not to put weight on his lower leg for four weeks.

Newhan, who was injured stealing second base Monday night in Baltimore's 4-2 win over the Angels, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right fibula. The Orioles' outfielder will undergo surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital on Thursday before a timetable is set for his return. Newhan was batting .265 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 10 games this season.

The Baltimore Orioles have recalled Newhan to replace the injured Eli Marrero on the 25-man roster. Newhan, who had been optioned to Triple-A Ottawa nearly three weeks ago, batted .366 with a homer and eight RBI in 11 games. In two stints with the Orioles this season, the 31-year-old Newhan has batted .198 with three homers and 12 RBI in 49 games.

Newhan has been optioned to Triple-A Ottawa by the Baltimore Orioles, opening a spot on the roster for veteran outfielder B.J. Surhoff, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday. In 49 games with the Orioles this season (116 at-bats), Newhan has batted just .198 with three home runs and 12 RBI.

Newhan was on his way down to Triple-A Ottawa, but instead, he will return to the Baltimore Orioles, filling the roster spot of ailing veteran B.J. Surhoff. The third baseman/outfielder, who had been demoted over the weekend, is batting .194 with three home runs, 12 RBI and four stolen bases in 40 games this season.

After being given the chance to start when Luis Matos went down with an injury, Orioles utilityman David Newhan has now been sent down to the Triple-A Ottawa. Newhan was batting only .194 in 108 at-bats, and he was replaced on the roster by none other than Luis Matos.

With Baltimore center fielder Luis Matos lost to a broken finger for six weeks or more, Newhan may see more playing time. The utilityman, who started his pro career as an infielder, could pick up some starts in center. He hasn't played much so far, going 5-for-23 (.217) in 14 games. A year ago, Newhan batted .311 with eight homers, 54 RBI and a .361 on-base percentage in 95 games as an Orioles rookie.

The 31-year-old Newhan is looking for a chance to start. On Wednesday, in the Orioles' first game after losing Matos, Larry Bigbie moved from left to center, and B.J. Surhoff and Jay Gibbons manned the corner spots.
