Dan Kolb

12/21/2005

The Brewers failed to offer Kolb a contract by Tuesday's deadline, making the former Milwaukee and Atlanta closer a free agent. Kolb had 60 saves for the Brewers in 2003 and 2004, but struggled after being traded to Atlanta last season. He was 3-8 with a 5.93 ERA and 11 saves in 65 appearances for the Braves and lost his closer's job early in the season.

Kolb was traded back to Milwaukee from Atlanta on Thursday, ending a disappointing one-year run for the reliever with the Braves. Kolb was an all-star closer for the Brewers in 2004, but struggled mightily in 2005 with Atlanta, going 3-8 with a 5.93 ERA. He converted only 11-of-18 save opportunities.

To work out some of his recent problems, Kolb will be moved out of the closer role and will pitch in middle relief for the Braves, according to manager Bobby Cox. The righthander, who has blown two of his last three save opportunities, is 1-4 with a 6.48 ERA and 10 saves in 19 relief appearances this season.

Given a two-run lead to work with, Kolb was unable to close things out in Tuesday's 4-3 defeat to the Washington Nationals. The Braves' righthander, who is in his first season with Atlanta, allowed three runs on two hits and two walks, taking the loss and blown save.

Just a bump in the road for Kolb. He notched the save in each of his first three appearances of the season, and should get back in the groove in his next outing. Kolb signed a one-year, $3.4 million contract with Atlanta during the offseason after going 0-4 with a 2.98 ERA and 39 saves in 64 games with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004.

Kolb is settling in with his new team nicely. Although he has allowed a run in two innings of work, the Braves' closer has notched the save in both of his appearances this season. He signed a one-year, $3.4 million contract with Atlanta during the offseason after going 0-4 with a 2.98 ERA and 39 saves in 64 games with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004.

Kolb isn't an overpowering pitcher, fanning just 21 batters in 57.1 innings last season. However, he'll post a solid ERA and he should get plenty of save opportunities with the Braves.
