Guillermo Mota

1/28/2006

After raising concerns about Mota's health, Cleveland and Boston finally reached a trade agreement that sends the former Red Sox's right-hander to the Indians and shuffles seven other players around the league. The 32-year-old Mota joined the Red Sox in November in a trade with Florida that involved Josh Beckett. He went 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA and two saves in 56 games for the Marlins last season, but missed more than a month with a sore elbow.

Mota, who hasn't pitched since September 15 because a tired arm and shoulder, has told Florida manager Jack McKeon that he is healthy and ready to pitch. The 32-year-old righthander, who wasn't used in Florida's extra-inning loss to the Mets on Tuesday, is 2-2 with two saves and 4.82 ERA in 55 appearances this season.

Mota will be activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Florida Marlins in time for Friday night's matchup with the New York Mets. The righthander, who has been sidelined for more than three weeks with inflammation in his pitching elbow, is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA and two saves in 10 relief appearances this season. 20-year-old Yorman Bazardo was optioned to the minor leagues to make room on the roster.

Mota is scheduled to take the mound for Class-A Jupiter the next two days, and if no problems are reported, he could return to the Marlins' bullpen as early as Wednesday. The righthander, who has been sidelined for more than three weeks with inflammation in his pitching elbow, is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA and two saves in 10 relief appearances this season.

According to Marlins manager Jack McKeon, Mota will throw batting practice on Tuesday, as he continues to expand his workouts with the club. The righthander, who has been sidelined for more than three weeks with inflammation in his pitching elbow, should be activated from the 15-day disabled list early next week. He is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA and two saves in 10 relief appearances this season.

Todd Jones will continue to receive most of the save opportunities until Mota is back in the bullpen. The Marlins have not indicated if Mota will be sent on a minor league rehab assignment prior to being activated.

Mota threw off the mound on two different occasions over the weekend and had no major problems with his troublesome pitching elbow. The Marlins' righthander, who has been sidelined for more than three weeks, is expected to expand his workouts over the next several days. He is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA and two saves in 10 relief appearances this season.

The Marlins have not indicated if Mota will be sent on a minor league rehab assignment prior to being activated from the disabled list. Either way, it appears he is still at least a week away from a return. Todd Jones will remain as the Marlins' go-to guy in the closer role until Mota can fully recover.

5/7/2005

On Friday, Mota threw lightly for the first time since going on the disabled list on May 1 with inflammation in his right elbow, and he reported no major problems. The Marlins' closer, who has not appeared in a game since April 23, may be out for another couple of weeks.

Barring any setbacks, Mota should return to throwing off a mound later this week. Todd Jones will remain as the Marlins' go-to guy in the closer role until Mota can fully recover.

Mota has been diagnosed with inflammation in his pitching elbow, and the Marlins have placed him on the 15-day disabled list. The closer, who has not appeared in a game since April 23, is expected to be sidelined for at least the next three weeks. During his absence, Todd Jones is slated to see most of the save opportunities for Florida.

No structural damage was found in Mota's elbow, so the Marlins are optimistic that he'll be able to return later this month. In 10 relief appearances this season, Mota is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA and two saves.

4/30/2005

Mota left the Marlins Friday to fly back to Florida to have his inflamed pitching elbow examined by the team doctor. The reliever, who has thrown only 9.2 innings this year, hasn't appeared in a game in a week.

4/24/2005

After going through 16 games without a save opportunity, Mota has earned saves in each of the last two games, both over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Beckett-Willis-Burnett triumvirate won't finish every game they start, although it seemed that way in the early going. Mota is poised for the breakthrough year fantasy owners were hoping for when they drafted him this spring.

4/14/2005

Mota is filling the closer role for the Florida Marlins this season, but he has yet to notch a save, and it's not that he's pitching badly. The righthander hasn't been presented with a save opportunity, as the team's starters have been dominating opponents. In four appearances, Mota has allowed three hits over four shutout innings, striking out two and walking one.

Mota will get plenty of chances to post saves as the season goes on, so just be patient. He split the 2004 campaign between the Dodgers and Marlins, going a combined 9-8 with a 3.07 ERA and four saves in 78 relief appearances. He fanned 85 and walked 37 in 96.2 innings of work.
