Kyle Farnsworth

6/18/2006

Farnsworth was not available for the second straight day on Sunday after leaving Friday's game with back spasms. The New York Yankees reliever is 2-4 with a 4.55 ERA with one save in five opportunities. Manager Joe Torre said he hoped Farnsworth would be able to pitch on Monday after having a throwing session on Sunday.

Farnsworth signed a $17 million, three-year contract with the Yankees on Friday to be the primary setup man for closer Mariano Rivera. The hard-throwing righthander split 2005 between Detroit and Atlanta, going 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA in 72 games.

Farnsworth dropped his appeal of a five-game suspension for body slamming Royals pitcher Jeremy Affeldt in a game last month, and the Braves' reliever began serving the penalty on Tuesday. Battling a sore back, Farnsworth was expected to miss a few games this week, so he decided to get the suspension out of the way at the same time.

The Atlanta Braves added a veteran arm to their bullpen Sunday, acquiring Farnsworth from the Detroit Tigers for promising righthanders Roman Colon and Zach Miner. Farnsworth had assumed closer duties in Detroit recently, and the hard-throwing righty departs with a 1-1 record, six saves, a 2.32 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 42.2 innings.

On Thursday, Major League Baseball fined and suspended Farnsworth for six games for tackling Royals reliever Jeremy Affeldt during Sunday's bench-clearing scuffle between Detroit and Kansas City. The Tigers' closer can hold off on serving his suspension by filing an appeal, and he plans to do that. The righthander is 1-1 with three saves and a 2.50 ERA in 43 games this season.

A week after assuming Detroit's closer role, Farnsworth allowed his first earned runs since June 19 on Wednesday. He gave up three ninth-inning runs on two hits and three walks before leaving with two outs and Detroit clinging to an 8-6 lead over the Chicago White Sox. Farnsworth left with a stiff neck, and Craig Dingman came on and recorded the last out for the save.

7/14/2005

Farnsworth is set to assume closer duties after the Detroit Tigers placed Troy Percival on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a partial tear of the right flexor pronator muscle mass. Farnsworth has been impressive this season, posting a 1-1 record, a save and a 1.95 ERA in his best performance since a solid 2002 campaign with the Chicago Cubs.

Due to tendinitis in his biceps, Farnsworth was unavailable to pitch in Thursday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The hard-throwing righthander, who is 1-1 with a 4.40 ERA in 14 relief appearances this season, has been listed as day-to-day by the Tigers.

Farnsworth will be re-evaluated on Friday to get an update on his status and availability. He has 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 14.1 innings.

Due to tendinitis in his biceps, Farnsworth was unavailable to pitch in Thursday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The hard-throwing righthander, who is 1-1 with a 4.40 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Tigers this season, was feeling better on Thursday than Wednesday, when Farnsworth first reported the injury. He is expected to miss only a couple days and should be ready by the end of the weekend.

Farnsworth, who has been out with a strained left biceps in recent days, is ready to pitch for the Tigers again. He was available on Monday night, when Detroit romped to a 13-3 victory over Baltimore, but the hard-throwing 29-year-old righthander wasn't needed. He has posted a 5.40 ERA and nine strikeouts over 6.2 innings of relief in 2005.

Farnsworth is expected to miss a couple of games because of a biceps strain in his pitching arm. The reliever, who was traded to Detroit by the Chicago Cubs in the offseason, has appeared in six games for the Tigers so far in 2005, posting a 0-0 mark with a 5.40 ERA.
