Gabe Kapler

6/20/2006

Kapler was in the Boston lineup on Monday for the first time since rupturing his Achilles' tendon on Sept. 14 while running the bases and had two hits, including a double, as the Red Sox beat the Nationals 6-3. He had a pinch-hit single two nights earlier in Atlanta, but was in right field for his first start of the season.

The Boston Red Sox invited Kapler, who is still recovering from a ruptured left Achilles' tendon, to join spring training as a non-roster invitee. The 30-year-old Kapler suffered the injury in Toronto on Sept. 14, leaving doubts that he would be healthy enough for spring training.

The Red Sox released Kapler from their 40-man roster last Friday.

Playing for injured center fielder Johnny Damon on Wednesday night, Kapler ruptured his left Achilles tendon while running the bases following Tony Graffanino's fifth-inning homer. Kapler rounded second base hard and tumbled to the ground between second and third. He was carried off on a cart, and rookie Alejandro Machado came on to finish running the bases for him.

The Boston Red Sox recalled Kapler from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday. The outfielder completed a rehab stint at Pawtucket after being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a back strain shortly after re-joining the Red Sox following a disappointing stint playing in Japan.

Kapler is eligible to come off the disabled list this weekend, and he tuned up for his major league return by finishing a double short of the cycle in Wednesday's game for Triple-A Pawtucket.

The Boston Red Sox signed Gabe Kapler on Saturday and immediately placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a strained back. Kapler, who hit .272 with Boston as a reserve outfielder in 2004, signed in the offseason with the Yomiuri Giants , but struggled with the Japanese club and was released last week.

Kapler was waived by the Yomiuri Giants, and is expected to sign a deal with the Boston Red Sox.
