Jerry Hairston Jr.

5/31/2006

Hairston was traded on Wednesday by the Chicago Cubs to the Texas Rangers. The Cubs' utilityman was traded to Chicago for Sammy Sosa before the 2005 season by the Baltimore Orioles. He was hitting .261 last season with 31 RBIs.

Hairston said he felt fine Monday, the day after he was beaned in an exhibition game by San Francisco's Kevin Correia. The Cubs' utilityman should resuming playing by midweek, as manager Dusty Baker will be a bit cautious with him over the next couple of days. Hairston walked off on his own after getting hit in the helmet and going down for a couple minutes during Sunday's action. He went to a local hospital for a precautionary CT scan.

Hairston was taken to a hospital for precautionary evaluation after being hit in the head by a pitch by the San Francisco Giants' Kevin Correia on Sunday. The Cubs' second baseman was the third player hit by a pitch in the first inning during the spring training game. Cubs starter Rich Hill struck two Giants batters in the top half of the inning.

Hairston agreed to a one-year, $2.3 million deal Monday with the Cubs and avoided a salary arbitration hearing.

Hairston has been diagnosed with a deep bone contusion on his left knee. He was injured after fouling a ball off his knee on Friday. The Cubs' trainer does not know when Hairston will be able to play again, but does not expect him to miss the remainder of the season. The Cubs' center fielder was in a walking brace on Saturday.

After missing the last couple of weeks with a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his left (non-throwing) elbow, Hairston has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Chicago Cubs. The utilityman, who will be available for the start of a weekend series against the Colorado Rockies, fills the roster spot of the demoted Matt Murton.

8/7/2005

Before the Cubs' Friday night loss to the New York Mets, the club put Hairston on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. The Cubs are hoping the injury will heal without surgery over the next 2-3 weeks, as it involves his non-throwing arm. Playing center field, Hairston hurt himself on a diving catch attempt Wednesday night.

7/27/2005

A bruised left calf kept Hairston out of the Chicago Cubs' starting lineup for Wednesday afternoon's meeting with the San Francisco Giants. The utiltiyman, who is batting .271 with four home runs, 18 RBI and seven stolen bases in 82 games this season, has been listed as day-to-day.

With Todd Walker out indefinitely with a sprained ligament in his left knee, Hairston is expected to step into the Chicago Cubs' lineup and get the majority of the starts at second base. Hairston, who was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in the Sammy Sosa trade, will be backed up by Jose Macias, Mike Fontenot and Neifi Perez.

Hairston batted .303 with two home runs, 24 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 86 games with the Orioles last season, but has yet to notch his first hit with the Cubs (eight at-bats). He and Corey Patterson are expected to fill the top two spots in the batting order.
