Calvin Pickering

4/22/2005

Unless Pickering starts to pick up his game, the Kansas City Royals might look elsewhere for a regular designated hitter. In 27 at-bats this season, he has just four hits, including a home run and three RBI, but has struck out 14 times. With Triple-A Omaha last season, Pickering batted .314 with 35 home runs and 79 RBI, so he obviously has some potential.

The Royals could turn to veterans Matt Stairs or Eli Marrero, or they could call up Ken Harvey, who Pickering beat out for the DH job in spring training this year.

Pickering is not expected to play in this weekend's series against the Detroit Tigers, as he has traveled to Los Angeles to be with his wife, who is scheduled to give birth at any time. The Royals' designated hitter/first baseman should rejoin the club early next week.

Pickering beat out Ken Harvey for one of the last spots on the Royals' roster this spring, but has struggled so far. In five games, he is just 3-for-19 with one home run, three RBI and eight strikeouts.
