Michael Barrett

6/29/2006

Barrett will return to the Cubs' lineup against the Chicago White Sox on Friday after serving a 10-game suspension for punching the Sox's A.J. Pierzynski after a collision at the plate on May 20. Barrett appealed the suspension, but it was upheld and he began serving it on June 19. "I have no ill feelings toward A.J. or toward the White Sox, or toward (manager) Ozzie (Guillen). I just want to beat them," the Cubs' catcher said.

Barrett will serve a 10-game suspension for punching the White Sox's A.J. Pierzynski after Major League Baseball upheld the suspension on Monday. Barrett will begin serving the suspension on Monday when Chicago meets Cleveland and will be eligible to play again on June 30 against the White Sox. The Cubs' catcher and Pierzynski collided at the plate on May 20 and Barrett eventually punched Pierzynski.

5/26/2006

Barrett appealed his 10-game suspension by the league for punching Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski in the face after he ran into him on a play at home, where Pierzynski scored in a 7-0 Cubs loss on Saturday. The Cubs catcher went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in a 6-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Friday as he remains in the lineup.

After being thrown out of Saturday's game, Barrett hit a triple in Sunday's contest against the Chicago White Sox, bringing in the game-tying run. The Chicago Cubs catcher was involved in a fight with A.J. Pierzynski after the White Sox catcher ran into him while scoring on a sacrifice fly. As Pierzynski stood up, Barrett grabbed him and punched him in the jaw.

Barrett, who sprained the middle finger on his right hand Tuesday sliding into second base, could be sidelined Friday when the Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers in the first game of a weekend series. X-rays were negative, but the swelling and discomfort could keep the Cubs' catcher on the bench for a day or two.

Barrett didn't play on Saturday or Sunday for the Cubs, and the veteran catcher has missed four straight games since he was struck on the helmet by a pitch on Wednesday. He is improving and remains day-to-day.

9/16/2005

Barrett is likely to return to the Chicago Cubs' lineup on Saturday or Sunday, a few days after he was hit on the helmet by a pitch on Wednesday. The Cubs' catcher didn't suffer most of the symptoms of a concussion, and the injury is being called a head trauma instead of a mild concussion.

9/15/2005

Barrett was hit on the helmet by a Matt Belisle pitch in the eighth inning of the Cubs' Wednesday night loss to Cincinnati. Chicago's catcher went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for tests, and it was believed he suffered a minor concussion.

As a precautionary measure, Barrett was limited to pinch-hitting duties in Saturday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates, due to a sore left hip. The catcher, who was replaced in the Cubs' starting lineup by Henry Blanco, said he hopes to return to regular action on Sunday.

6/8/2005

Barrett had a productive night at the plate in Tuesday's loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, going 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs. Over his last four games, the Cubs' catcher is 8-for-16 (.500) with two doubles, two home runs, five RBI and four runs scored.

5/20/2005

Barrett has been bothered by stiffness in his throwing shoulder over the last week, but an MRI exam on Thursday revealed nothing more than inflammation. The Cubs' catcher didn't start the Friday afternoon opener between the Cubs and White Sox, giving way to Henry Blanco, but Barrett is likely to return to action over the weekend.

4/19/2005

Barrett began the 2005 campaign by going 5-for-18 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI in his first four games. Since that time, the Cubs' catcher has been in quite a slump, going hitless in his last 21 at-bats, striking out four times. Over that span, he's seen his batting average plummet from .278 to .128.

Barrett hit .287 with 16 homers in his first season with the Cubs last year, so things should even out over the coming weeks. However, manager Dusty Baker might give backup Henry Blanco a few more looks, at least until Barrett can regain his confidence at the plate.
