Bruce Chen

1/17/2006

Chen agreed to a $3.8 million, one-year contract with Baltimore on Tuesday. Chen, who has played for eight teams, went 13-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 34 games for the Orioles last season. The left-hander struck out 133 batters in 197 1/3 innings.

Chen threw in the bullpen on Tuesday, but it is still uncertain whether he will make his scheduled start on Thursday against Cleveland. The Baltimore lefthander sustained a sprained left big toe on Saturday and continues to limp. Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said the club will wait until Wednesday or perhaps even Thursday to make the call.

The left big toe that Chen sprained in Baltimore's loss to Atlanta Saturday may keep the lefthanded starter from taking his scheduled turn on Thursday. The 28-year-old Chen will attempt to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, which probably will determine whether he can make Thursday's start against Cleveland.

Orioles starter Bruce Chen left Saturday's game against the Braves due to a sprained toe on his left foot. Chen pulled up lame after throwing a pitch to the Braves' Marcus Giles in the fifth inning. Following a walk to Giles, Orioles manager Lee Mazilli removed the starter in order to conduct precautionary X-rays. These came back negative, and Chen is hopeful he will be able to make his next scheduled start.
