Sidney Ponson

7/14/2006

The New York Yankees are expected to sign Ponson on Friday. The 29-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment last week by the Cardinals, then released Thursday. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the deal "made sense, compared to everything else that was available to us."

7/8/2006

Ponson was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Friday to make room on the roster for newly acquired pitcher Jeff Weaver. St. Louis has 10 days to trade, release or send Ponson outright to the minors. In his first season with the Cardinals, Ponson was 4-4 with a 5.24 ERA in 14 games, including 13 starts.

5/10/2006

The St. Louis Cardinals placed Ponson on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with an acute flexor muscle strain in his right elbow. He suffered the injury early in his Sunday start against the Florida Marlins. Ponson will not throw for a week before beginning a rehab program. "This just ensures that we're not tempted to rush him," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said of the DL move. "We just want him to take the 15 days to be sure."

5/9/2006

Ponson is expected to miss his next start after he strained a muscle in his right elbow in the Cardinals' 9-1 victory over the Florida Marlins Sunday. St. Louis trainer Barry Weinberg said Ponson sustained an acute flexor muscle strain. The St. Louis right-hander, who left in the third inning of his start, will be evaluated a second time soon to determine a treatment and throwing program.

5/7/2006

Ponson left the Cardinal's 9-1 win over the Marlins on Sunday in the third inning because of elbow discomfort.

3/22/2006

The St. Louis Cardinals have named Ponson their fifth starter to open the 2006 season. The veteran right-hander competed against pitching prospect Anthony Reyes for the final spot in the St. Louis rotation. Ponson will stick with the Cardinals after signing a $1 million contract in December while Reyes will begin his season at Triple-A Memphis.

12/21/2005

Ponson and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal on Wednesday, with an additional $1.5 million available in performance bonuses. The troubled starter was released by the Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 6 and the team voided his contract.

9/1/2005

The Baltimore Orioles released Ponson on Thursday, contending that his troubles with alcohol and the law are grounds for voiding his contract. Out with a strained calf muscle and torn ligament in his right thumb since early August, the 28-year-old righthander was activated from the disabled list and cut loose. He was 7-11 with a 6.21 ERA for the Orioles this year.

8/25/2005

Ponson continues to run afoul of the law off the field. He was arrested early this morning on a drunken driving charge on I-95 outside of Baltimore.

8/17/2005

Ponson threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and still reported pain in his tender calf muscle, making it unlikely that he will come off the disabled list when eligible on August 24. The Orioles have two days off in the next week, so it's easier to be conservative with the 28-year-old righthander, who is 7-11 with a 6.21 ERA in 23 starts this season.

8/9/2005

Ponson was placed on the 15-day disabled list, having suffered a strained right calf last Sunday while covering first base defensively against the Texas Rangers. Since last winning on June 18, he has gone 0-7 in his last nine starts, with a 8.44 ERA.

8/7/2005

Ponson left in the third inning of Baltimore's 9-3 loss to Texas Sunday with a right calf strain. He hurt himself covering first base on a grounder off the bat of Gary Matthews Jr. in the second. He left with the Orioles down 2-0.

7/30/2005

Ponson bruised his right thumb during his Thursday start, when the Orioles' righthander was struck by a line drive off the bat of Sandy Alomar in Baltimore's 2-1 loss to Texas. Ponson, who is 7-9 with a 5.80 ERA this season, immediately left the game.

7/23/2005

The Baltimore Orioles are discussing a trade that would send Ponson to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Phil Nevin. However, the deal cannot be made unless Nevin agrees to waive his limited no-trade clause, which he had not done as of Saturday afternoon.

5/26/2005

Ponson will move up a day and pitch for Baltimore on Friday instead of Saturday. He will assume the start scheduled for Erik Bedard, who went on the 15-day disabled list Thursday for a knee injury. On Friday, Ponson will square off against Detroit's Nate Robertson. The Orioles' righthander is 5-2 with a 5.83 ERA in nine starts.

4/22/2005

Ponson is scheduled to start in Toronto on Sunday, but so far he has been unable to get a work visa to enter Canada because of his drunk-driving arrest in Florida. The Florida case is still pending, following his arrest in January, but the Orioles are hoping a work permit will be issued by Sunday. All of Ponson's paperwork is in Buffalo, where Ponson will have to travel before driving into Canada to join his teammates.

The Orioles are working on a contingency plan, in case Ponson doesn't get government clearance in time to pitch Sunday's game against the Jays.
