Kevin Millar

6/6/2005

Millar may see less playing time this week, as Boston will play interleague series in St. Louis and Chicago. Chances are, the everyday DH David Ortiz has been working out with his first-base mitt recently, preparing for life without the DH spot.

Millar notched the fourth multihomer game of his major league career, belting a pair of solo shots in Saturday's loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The Red Sox' first baseman also added a double and finished the game with three RBI and three runs scored.

After fouling a ball off his left instep on Saturday, Millar was out of Boston's lineup on Sunday. X-rays came back negative, and the Red Sox' first baseman is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday, when Boston opens a three-game series in Toronto. In 2005, Millar is hitting .243 with two homers and 22 RBI in 42 games.

The cramping in Millar's left leg has subsided, and the Red Sox expect him to be available for Friday's matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays. The ailment forced the first baseman to leave Wednesday's win over the New York Yankees, but never was considered serious.

The Red Sox might choose to use Millar at designated hitter until they are sure the leg is 100 percent. Through three games this season, he is 4-for-8 with two RBI and three walks.

Millar was 3-for-3 with two RBI in Wednesday's game against the New York Yankees, but was pulled from the lineup after developing a cramp in his left leg in the sixth inning. The first baseman, who was replaced by Dave McCarty, will be re-evaluated on Thursday. For now, he has been listed as day-to-day.

The Sox are off on Thursday, which should give Millar ample time to bounce back before Friday's meeting with the Blue Jays. Through three games this season, he is 4-for-8 with two RBI, three walks and a run scored.
