John Halama

10/1/2005

Halama left the game with a bruised pitching hand when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Kenny Lofton in the sixth inning of Saturday's loss to the Phillies. Halama had come into the game in relief and only faced the one batter.

The Washington Nationals have purchased Halama's contract from Triple-A New Orleans. With a doubleheader on Thursday, the team was in need of another starter for their weekend series against the New York Mets, prompting the move. The lefthander, who takes the roster spot of demoted outfielder Brandon Watson, is slated to take the mound on Sunday.

Halama has been designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox, opening a spot on the roster for fellow reliever Manny Delcarmen, who was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday. In 30 appearances with the Sox this season, including one start, the 33-year-old Halama went 1-1 with a 6.18 ERA. He struck out 26 batters, walked nine and allowed five home runs in 43.2 innings of work.

Halama enjoyed a successful spot start against Detroit Tuesday, working five innings while allowing four hits and two runs in a 5-3 Boston win. The lefthander earned his first "W" of the season.

His win over the Tigers may be his only start in place of injured starters Curt Schilling and David Wells. Jeremi Gonzalez is set to take a turn for the injured vets on Saturday, but Wade Miller, coming off a rehab stint for a rotator cuff injury, looks ready to make his 2005 debut on Sunday. If Miller is fine, Halama is likely to return to the Red Sox' bullpen.

With Curt Schilling joining David Wells on the disabled list, Halama's first start for the Boston Red Sox has been moved up from Tuesday to Monday. The 33-year-old lefthander will face Detroit at Tiger Stadium that night, and he's tentatively scheduled to square off against righthander Jeremy Bonderman.

As a reliever this season, Halama has posted a 3.52 ERA in eight appearances.

With David Wells heading for the 15-day disabled list for a foot injury, the Boston Red Sox plan to move Halama into their rotation. Tentatively, the 33-year-old lefthander will make his first start of 2005 in Detroit next Tuesday.

As a reliever this season, Halama has posted a 3.52 ERA in eight appearances. He was 5-5 with a 6.03 ERA in 14 outings as a starter last season for Tampa Bay. In 20 relief appearances for the Rays, he was 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA. It's conceivable that Wade Miller will take over Wells' starts at some point in May.
