Sean Casey

8/2/2006

Casey homered in his first game with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday after being traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. He finished the game 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored.

7/31/2006

The Tigers acquired Casey from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Brian Rogers. Casey, a career .304 hitter, gives the AL Central-leading Tigers the left-handed-hitting presence they have lacked as they head toward a playoff berth.

7/30/2006

Casey was scratched from the lineup with a strained rib cage muscle Saturday, the same night the Pirates drew a capacity crowd for a Casey bobblehead doll giveaway. Casey is unsigned past this season, and could be dealt before Monday's deadline for trading without waivers.

4/17/2006

Casey suffered two fractures in his lower back Friday in Pittsburgh's 11-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The Pirates' first baseman will be lost six to eight weeks after colliding with Chicago's John Mabry on a play at the first-base bag.

3/9/2006

With three concussions in his medical history, Casey will miss a couple of games with the Pirates after he took a pitch from Cincinnati's Michael Gosling off the batting helmet Wednesday.

3/8/2006

Casey took a pitch from Cincinnati's Michael Gosling off the batting helmet Wednesday. The Pirates' first baseman lied on the ground for about 30 seconds, but he got up and took first base before leaving at the conclusion of the inning. Casey had minor swelling above his right eye, but otherwise appeared fine after the game.

12/8/2005

The Cincinnati Reds traded Casey and cash to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for left-handed pitcher Dave Williams. Casey missed time in 2005 due to a bruised left rotator cuff and a Grade II concussion. He hit .312 with nine home runs and 58 RBI last season.

9/21/2005

Casey may be done for the season following the third concussion of his career on Friday. The Reds don't want to risk a head injury over the final 12 days of the 2005 campaign. They are reserving judgment on Casey's status until a medical evaluation is performed on Friday.

9/19/2005

Casey was examined Monday by spine specialist Dr. John Brannan and cleared to participate in light physical conditioning, but there's no timetable for his return to the Cincinnati lineup. The Reds' first baseman was knocked unconscious briefly and suffered a concussion after a collision on the field in Friday night's game at Pittsburgh.

9/18/2005

Casey suffered a concussion Friday, when he was accidentally struck in the head by Pirates catcher Humberto Cota at first base. Diagnosed with a Grade 2 concussion, the Reds' first baseman won't play until at least Tuesday. "I'm sore and feel as if I have whiplash, and the right side of my neck is so tight," said Casey, about a collision he doesn't remember.

9/16/2005

Casey left the first game of Friday's doubleheader with the Pirates on a stretcher after being accidentally struck in the head by Pirates catcher Humberto Cota. Cota hit a groundball to Reds third baseman Edwin Encarnacion, and with the throw on the home plate side of first, Casey was hit in the head by Cota's forearm as he tried to avoid the first baseman's tag. Prior to being lifted off the field, Casey was talking to trainers while lying immobilized on the ground.

8/18/2005

After being limited to pinch-hitting duties by a strained left shoulder the previous night, Casey was back in the Cincinnati Reds' starting lineup for Thursday afternoon's meeting with the San Francisco Giants. The veteran first baseman went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks in his return.

8/17/2005

Casey was removed after the first inning of Tuesday night's game with strained left shoulder. He hurt it after a bad swing in his first at-bat. The injury occurred on a 1-1 pitch, but Casey managed to finish the at-bat with a groundout. He was removed after he could not lift his arm during the warmup before the second inning.

8/5/2005

Casey recorded his first multihomer game of the 2005 campaign and 10th of his major league career, teeing off twice in Thursday's loss to the Atlanta Braves. The Reds' veteran first baseman connected for two-run homer in the fourth inning before adding a solo shot in the eighth. He also added a double in the sixth to score Ken Griffey.

6/17/2005

Casey returned to the Reds lineup after missing two games due to a death in his family. Casey won't need any more time off, and you should expect him to be in the lineup every day.

6/15/2005

Casey will leave the Cincinnati Reds and miss two games because of a death in his family. The Reds' first baseman played on Tuesday after receiving the news, but he will leave Boston for the funeral on Thursday and return to the team on Friday.

5/30/2005

Casey got his first start in nearly a week, going 1-for-4 with a walk and run scored in Sunday's victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds' first baseman, who had been limited by a bruised rotator cuff in his left shoulder, extended his hitting streak to six games. Over that span, he is 9-for-17 with three doubles, three walks, one RBI and a stolen base.

5/25/2005

An MRI on Casey's left shoulder has revealed a bruised rotator cuff, an injury suffered while the first baseman was trying to field a grounder in the seventh inning of Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals. Casey was absent from the Reds' starting lineup on Wednesday and has been listed as day-to-day.

5/18/2005

Casey went a perfect 5-for-5 with a double, home run, four RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's loss to the New York Mets. With the performance, which tied a career high for hits in a single game, the Reds' first baseman improved his season batting average nearly 25 points, from .273 to .297.

5/4/2005

Casey notched a lone single in four at-bats in Tuesday's loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, but extended his current hitting streak to 12 games. Over that span, the Reds' first baseman is 18-for-47 (.383) with four doubles, one home run and six RBI.

During the streak, Casey has improved his season batting average from .250 to .313.
