Ben Grieve

1/20/2006

Grieve agreed to a minor league deal with the White Sox on Thursday, one more chance for the former AL Rookie of the Year. The outfielder appeared in 23 games for the Cubs last season, hitting .250 (5-for-20) with one RBI.

Grieve's most recent stint with the Chicago Cubs lasted less than a week, as he has been optioned back to Triple-A Iowa to open a spot on the roster for fellow outfielder Jody Gerut, who was acquired from the Cleveland Indians on Monday. In 14 at-bats with the major league club this season, Grieve has five hits, five walks and an RBI.

Grieve has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa by the Chicago Cubs, replacing rookie Adam Greenberg, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list after getting beaned in the head with a pitch last weekend. In 15 games with the Cubs earlier this season, Grieve went 3-for-12 with an RBI and five walks.

Needing a spot on the 25-man roster for Tuesday's scheduled starter Sergio Mitre, the Chicago Cubs have optioned Grieve to Triple-A Iowa. The outfielder has served as a backup during his time with the major league club this season, going 3-for-12 with one RBI and five walks in 15 games.

The Cubs have purchased the contract of outfielder Ben Grieve from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday to replace the demoted Mike Fontenot. Grieve, who won Rookie of the Year honors with Oakland in 1998, hit .250 with one home run and six RBI in 15 games with the club last year.

With Nomar Garciaparra going on the disabled list, Grieve will provide a much-needed veteran bat off the bench for the Cubs.

Grieve is back in the Chicago Cubs' organization, agreeing to a minor league contract on Tuesday. The outfielder spent spring training with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis and eventually was released. He likely will report to Triple-A Iowa within the next few days.

Grieve, who turns 28 in May, batted .355 with nine RBI in 15 exhibition games this spring. Last season, he hit .260 with eight homers and 35 RBI in 250 at-bats with Milwaukee and the Cubs.
