Carlos Almanzar

5/18/2005

Tommy John surgery and a procedure to relocate the ulnar nerve have been scheduled for Almanzar on Wednesday. The 31-year-old righthander will become the third Rangers reliever this spring to undergo Tommy John surgery. After working five innings and posting a 14.40 ERA for Texas before being shut down, look for Almanzar's return in 2006.

Dr. Lewis Yocum concurred with Texas team physician Keith Meister that Almanzar should undergo Tommy John surgery and an additional procedure to relocate the ulnar nerve. The knife seems inevitable, but there's no word yet when Almanzar will become the third Rangers reliever this spring to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Almanzar decided to hold off on the Tommy John surgery and an ulnar nerve procedure that were scheduled for last Friday, as the Texas Rangers' reliever instead chose to get a second opinion. He will have his ailing right elbow examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum before deciding on a course of action.

Almanzar is hopeful that he can avoid Tommy John surgery, which would sideline him for at least a year. The ulnar nerve procedure alone would end his 2005 campaign, but he would be better prepared to start the 2006 season if he is able to avoid having his elbow rebuilt.

Almanzar is scheduled for Tommy John surgery this Friday, and the Rangers' reliever may be lost to the team until sometime around midseason 2006. He is the second Texas setup man to undergo the same procedure, as Frank Francisco had surgery at the end of April.

Almanzar made six appearances for Texas this season and posted a 14.40 ERA.

On Sunday, the Texas Rangers placed Almanzar on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation. The righthanded reliever had allowed eight runs in five innings since an extended stay on the bereavement list in early April, following the death of his mother and a brother. In his last two appearances, Almanzar allowed home runs to the first batter he faced.

Taking Almanzar's spot in the Texas bullpen is Joaquin Benoit, who had been on the DL all season with right shoulder tendinitis.

Almanzar showed up in the Rangers' clubhouse just prior to Thursday night's tilt against Toronto. He is likely to be activated from the bereavement list before Friday night's second game of the weekend four-game set.

4/14/2005

Almanzar is expected to return to the Texas Rangers on Thursday. He was on a bereavement leave following the deaths of his mother and brother in the Dominican Republic. Whether he will return in time to be in uniform for the Rangers' Thursday night home game against Toronto is uncertain.

Almanzar has been gone for a little more than a week, so he may not be ready to pitch for a couple of day. The Rangers' bullpen, which has been hit by injuries, could use his services immediately. Someone will have to be dispatched to Triple-A Oklahoma to make room for Almanzar, and that is likely to be Nick Regilio or Ryan Bukvich.

Almanzar has been placed on the bereavement list by the Texas Rangers after the death of his mother. The righthander will travel to his native Dominican Republic, and the team does not have a definitive timetable for his return, according to manager Buck Showalter. In 67 relief appearances last season, Almanzar went 7-3 with a 3.72 ERA.

Filling Almanzar's roster spot will be Nick Regilio, who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma.
