Brett Tomko

7/26/2006

Tomko is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list before the end of the week. The Dodgers' right-hander has been sidelined since straining an oblique muscle in his left side in a 10-4 win over Pittsburgh on June 23. Tomko, who made two rehab appearances for Triple-A Las Vegas last weekend, will come out of the bullpen when he returns.

Tomko was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left oblique muscle, with the move retroactive to Saturday. The Dodgers' right-hander was scheduled to start Wednesday against Minnesota, but will be replaced by left-hander Odalis Perez. Tomko pitched five shutout innings Friday, allowing just two hits and no walks, before leaving a 10-4 victory over Pittsburgh with the injury.

Despite leaving with an injury, Tomko snapped a string of five consecutive losing starts in the Dodgers' 10-4 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. The 33-year-old right-hander allowed two hits and no walks through five innings before a strained left oblique muscle ended his outing after 69 pitches.

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to make noise this offseason, agreeing to a two-year, $8.7 million contract with veteran Brett Tomko. The right-hander, who will turn 33 in April, spent last season with division rival San Francisco Giants, going 8-15 with a 4.48 ERA, three complete games and one save in 33 appearances, including 30 starts.

Tomko has been scratched from his scheduled start Sunday, as the San Francisco righthander has been hobbled by a bruise on his right foot that has forced him to wear a walking boot for the past three days. The injury doesn't appear to be serious, but the boot helped limit Tomko's activity with the team.

After being demoted to the bullpen on June 29, Tomko has been added back into the Giants' starting rotation. Tomko is slated to start Thursday's game against the Reds. This season, the righthander is 5-10 with a 5.16 ERA in 18 games this season.

According to Giants manager Felipe Alou, Tomko has been demoted to the bullpen to give him some time to get out of his funk. The veteran righthander lasted just 2.2 innings before being pulled from Sunday's 16-0 loss to the Oakland A's, surrendering six runs on a season-high 10 hits prior to his departure. He has lost his last three decisions and seen his ERA jump from 3.86 to its current 5.19 over that span.

Tomko lasted just 2.2 innings before being pulled from Sunday's 16-0 loss to the Oakland A's. The Giants' righthander, who walked two and did not strike out a batter, surrendered six runs on a season-high 10 hits prior to his departure.

Tomko and the Pirates' Mark Redman were locked into a pitchers duel on Monday, both going the distance in the Giants' 2-1 victory. Tomko recorded the win, allowing just one run on six hits over nine innings of work. The righthander, who struck out seven batters and walked one, has two complete games in his last three starts.

For the season, Tomko is 3-4 with a 4.15 ERA in seven outings. He now has 11 complete games in his major league career.
