Russ Johnson

7/18/2005

On Sunday, the New York Yankees designated Johnson for assignment, in order to make room for Wednesday's starter, Aaron Small. Johnson was 4-for-18 (.222) with two doubles and five runs scored in 22 games for New York.

With Felix Rodriguez going on the disabled list with a knee injury, the New York Yankees plan to recall Johnson for his first big league stint since 2002. The 32-year-old utilityman was batting .285 with five homers and 20 RBI for Triple-A Columbus.

Johnson was serving as the Clippers' starting third baseman, but could play at a number of positions as a bench player for New York. He last played in the majors for Tampa Bay in 2002.
