Jeremi Gonzalez

7/4/2005

The Red Sox recalled Gonzalez from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday. The 30-year-old righthander will work out of the Boston bullpen. He was in the majors in May, going 1-1 with a 6.65 ERA in five games (three starts) for the Red Sox.

Gonzalez turned in a respectable outing in his 2005 debut, allowing six hits and three earned runs over five innings while striking out seven. He departed after five frames with Boston knotted in a 3-3 tie with Detroit. The Tigers jumped on Blaine Neal for two sixth-inning runs and went on to beat the Red Sox, 8-3.

On Tuesday, it's John Halama's turn to step into the Red Sox' rotation and pitch in place of the two injured starters, Curt Schilling and David Wells.

On Monday morning, the Boston Red Sox recalled Gonzalez from Triple-A Pawtucket, in order to make Boston's Monday night start against the Tigers in Detroit. The 30-year-old righthander was 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts with Pawtucket.

Gonzalez owns a career record of 24-32 with a 4.69 ERA in 79 games, including 76 starts. He went 0-5 with a 6.97 ERA in 11 games -- eight starts -- with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last year. The Red Sox need Gonzalez after both David Wells and Curt Schilling went on the disabled list last week. They designated first baseman Dave McCarty for assignment to make room for Gonzalez.
