Deivi Cruz

3/30/2006

The St. Louis Cardinals released Cruz on Wednesday. The middle infielder, who was signed to a non-guaranteed contract in December, was cut loose after batting just .146 with two RBIs in 41 at-bats this spring. He batted .265 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 101 games with San Francisco and Washington in 2005.

On Tuesday, the San Francisco Giants dealt Cruz to the Washington Nationals for minor league pitcher Benjamin Cox. The veteran shortstop batted .268 with a .301 on-base percentage in 81 games for the Giants.

Cruz got a rare start in Tuesday's meeting with the Cincinnati Reds, and he took advantage of the added playing time, recording a career high for hits in a game. The Giants' infielder finished the contest a perfect 5-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored.
