Pokey Reese

3/6/2006

The Florida Marlins terminated Reese's contract after he disappeared for a couple of days without explanation. After the veteran second baseman failed to explain his absence over the next 72 hours, the Marlins cut him loose.

12/30/2005

Reese agreed to a one-year deal with the Marlins on Thursday worth a reported $800,000. The infielder spent all of 2005 on the disabled list following surgery on his right shoulder. Reese hit .221 in 244 at-bats for the Red Sox in 2004.

Reese reportedly experienced a setback in his rehab from May shoulder surgery just prior to the All-Star break, and it is looking increasingly likely that the shortstop will not play for the Mariners in 2005. Reese has yet to take the field this season, and is residing on the 60-day disabled list. He is under contract for 2006, but Seattle could decide to exercise its $300,000 buyout clause. In 351 combined at-bats in 2003 and 2004, Reese hit .219 with a .271 OBP.

On Thursday, Reese underwent surgery on his sore right shoulder. The Mariners' shortstop, who has yet to play in the majors this season, will begin his rehabilitation work in Seattle.

There's no word yet whether Reese has any chance of returning before the 2005 campaign ends. He's on the 60-day disabled list.

Reese, who has been told by Seattle's team orthopedist that he needs shoulder surgery, is in Alabama pursuing a second opinion before deciding to go under the knife. He was to be examined on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Mariners moved the middle infielder from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the roster for pinch-hitter Dave Hansen, who was recalled on Wednesday.

4/28/2005

Reese was told by team orthopedist Dr. Larry Pedegana that surgery is required to repair his ailing shoulder. That wasn't surprising news, considering the Mariners' shortstop had rested the shoulder for a lengthy stretch this spring and immediately experienced significant shoulder pain again when he resumed baseball activities. He will seek a second opinion before agreeing to go under the knife.

Seattle manager Mike Hargove suggested that Reese's surgery may not be season-ending. The specifics of his treatment and the length of his rehabilitation should be made known after Reese sees another orthopedist.

Reese, sidelined since spring training with pain behind his right shoulder, has been shut down. The Mariners' shortstop had begun a minor league rehab assignment recently, but the persistent pain quickly returned and worsened in game situations. He has been sent to Seattle to have his shoulder examined.

This doesn't sound good. Lots of rest didn't work, with the discomfort worsening as soon as Reese started playing. Don't look for Reese in Seattle anytime soon, and it's possible that surgery is in his future.

4/19/2005

No longer experiencing discomfort in his throwing shoulder, Reese will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday. The Mariners plan to send their shortstop to high Class-A Inland Empire for three games, followed by a five-game stint with Double-A San Antonio. If all goes well through those eight contests, Reese will head to Seattle.

Reese still has discomfort in his strained right shoulder, which has limited the amount of throwing he's been able to do over the past couple of weeks. If the Mariners' infielder shows improvement over the next few days, he could be sent on a minor league rehab assignment some time next week. A definite timetable for his return has not been set.

Expect Reese to be sidelined for at least another couple of weeks. In 14 exhibition games this spring, he batted just .129 with two RBI and one stolen base. He's also committed three errors. Until Reese is back, Wilson Valdez is expected to start at shortstop for Seattle, with Willie Bloomquist likely to get a couple of chances as well.

For the first time since going on the disabled list almost a week ago, Reese played catch Monday. The Seattle shortstop has been taking batting practice and fielding groundballs, but hadn't tested his strained right shoulder before Monday. Reese is expected to go on a minor league rehab assignment within a few days.

After undergoing an MRI, Reese has been diagnosed with a strained right shoulder, an injury that currently has him on the 15-day disabled list. However, no structural damage was found, and the veteran shortstop does not expect to be sidelined for an extended period. Despite the good news, the Mariners have yet to set a firm timetable for Reese's return.

In 14 exhibition games this spring, Reese batted just .129 with two RBI and one stolen base. He's also committed three errors. Until he is back, Wilson Valdez is expected to start at shortstop for Seattle, with Willie Bloomquist likely to get a couple of chances as well.

Still not fully recovered from a nagging right shoulder injury, Reese has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Seattle Mariners. The veteran infielder is slated to serve as the club's everyday shortstop, once healthy. He should be activated within the next couple of weeks.
