Neifi Perez

11/8/2005

Perez and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a two-year, $5 million contract extension Tuesday. The 32-year-old shortstop batted .274 with a .298 on-base percentage and 33 doubles in 154 games last season. He scored 59 runs and drove in 54.

The second grand slam of Perez' career couldn't have come at a better time, as the shortstop cleared the right-field fence with a low liner in the 10th inning of Sunday's 8-4 extra-inning victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The homer was the only hit in the game for Perez in five at-bats.

Perez extended his current hitting streak to 10 games, going 4-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI in Wednesday's victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Over that span, the Cubs' veteran infielder is 19-for-45 (.422) with four doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

If Perez can continue his hot hitting, it will lessen the blow of losing shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to a groin injury for the Chicago Cubs. Since Nomar went down late last week, Perez has stepped up his game, going 8-for-11 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored in his last three contests.

Through 16 games, Perez is batting .396 with two home runs and eight RBI. He will continue to serve as the Cubs' primary shortstop and also could see a few starts at second base as well.

Chicago Cubs manager recently has been playing Perez on a daily basis because he's been swinging a hot bat. Now, with Nomar Garciaparra sidelined indefinitely with a groin injury, Baker will look to Perez to take over as the team's everyday shortstop. With Todd Walker still out as well, Jerry Hairston will handle the second-base duties, giving the Cubs a entirely different middle infield than they envisioned going into the season.

Despite notching just one hit in his last 13 at-bats, Perez is off to a solid start in 2005. He is batting .297 with a double, home run and six RBI in 13 games. Even though he'll be playing regularily, Perez has limited fantasy value, as he lacks power and probably won't drive in a lot of runs. He is a career .270 hitter.
