Felix Heredia

10/18/2005

Heredia has been suspended for the first 10 days of the 2006 season for violating baseball's steroids policy. The veteran lefthander appeared in only three games in 2005, going on the disabled list in April with a strained left thumb before doctors found an aneurysm in his left shoulder that was causing circulation problems. He had season-ending surgery.

Heredia, currently on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left thumb, also has been battling circulation problems in his arm. After being evaluated more closely, the Mets' reliever has been diagnosed with an aneurysm in his left shoulder, and he will undergo surgery on Thursday, putting an end to his 2005 season.

Heredia has been sent back to New York to undergo tests to determine the extent of the left thumb problem that forced him to leave in the sixth inning of Monday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets' lefthander will be unavailable for Tuesday's contest, and reportedly, he could land on the disabled list.

Heredia has been bothered by numbness in his pitching hand since spring training, so unless he improves significantly over the next day or two, a trip to the DL is likely. Despite the ailment, he has allowed just one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings so far this season.

After undergoing an MRI in New York on Tuesday, Heredia was diagnosed with a strained thumb on his pitching hand and has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Mets. The lefthander, who was pulled from Monday's loss to the Philadelphia Phillies after reporting numbness and weakness in the thumb, will be replaced on the roster by righthander Heath Bell.
