Paul Wilson

3/27/2006

Wilson continues to prepare for the season following shoulder surgery in June. He threw 60 pitches against hitters in batting practice Sunday without problems. Next the Reds' right-hander will work a simulated game on Friday. Wilson will start the year on the disabled list and continue his rehab work in Florida.

Friday's exploratory surgery on Wilson's ailing right shoulder revealed tears in the labrum and rotator cuff, which were repaired and will sideline the Cincinnati righthander for the remainder of the 2005 season. It's the second time that the 32-year-old veteran suffered a torn labrum. He also had one in 1996 during his tenure with the New York Mets.

Wilson is scheduled to have exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Friday. The procedure could involve repairing a tear in the labrum or cleaning it up. Whatever needs to be done will be done on the table by Reds medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek.

After further evaluation, Wilson has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his pitching shoulder, and the Reds have decided to place him on the 15-day disabled list. The move is retroactive to May 17, as the righthander has been skipped the last two times through the starting rotation. Outfielder Jason Romano has been called up from the minor leagues to fill the roster spot.

For the second consecutive time through the starting rotation, the Reds will skip the struggling Wilson, and he will not pitch in their upcoming three-game series against the Washington Nationals, as had been scheduled. The righthander, who has not taken the mound in a week, could return to action this weekend.

Wilson was in line to take the mound during the Reds' three-games series against the Cleveland Indians this weekend, but because of his recent struggles, the team has decided to skip his spot in the starting rotation. Aaron Harang, Elizardo Ramirez and Ramon Ortiz are the scheduled starters.
