Sal Fasano

7/26/2006

The New York Yankees acquired Fasano from the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday for minor league second baseman Hector Made. Fasano had been designated for assignment by the Phillies on July 22.

Fasano was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Phillies on Tuesday with a knee injury. Fasano has had inflammation in his left knee for the better part of the season and had to leave Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays when the condition got worse.

Fasano and the Phillies agreed Thursday to a $425,000, one-year contract. The free-agent catcher hit .250 with the Baltimore Orioles last season. He had a career-high 11 homers and 20 RBIs in 64 games and 160 at-bats.

Fasano, who has shown excellent power since he was recalled from the minors on May 11, will be guaranteed most of the starts behind the plate after Geronimo Gil was placed on the disabled list over the weekend with a sprained thumb. Fasano is batting .259 with six home runs and nine RBI in 85 at-bats for the Orioles.

With Javy Lopez out with a broken hand and Geronimo Gil nursing a left thumb injury in recent days, Fasano has taken over starting catcher duties lately and performed well. He has a four-game hitting streak after hitting two solo homers in Baltimore's 6-5 loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday. During his four-game run, the 33-year-old veteran is 5-for-13 (.385) with a double, two homers and five runs scored.

Just one day after being designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles, Fasano has re-signed with the club, filling the roster spot of Javy Lopez, who will be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. Geronimo Gil is expected to get the majority of the starts behind the plate in Lopez' absence, with Fasano serving as the primary backup.

5/24/2005

Less than two weeks after getting his first call to the majors since 2002, Fasano was designated for assignment by the Orioles to make room for the return of Sammy Sosa from the disabled list. Fasano was productive in four games with Baltimore, going 3-for-9 with two homers and three RBI.

5/12/2005

The Baltimore Orioles recalled Fasano on Wednesday to give the club a third option behind the plate. The 33-year-old catcher, who hasn't been in the majors since 2002, was hitting .267 with four homers and 12 RBI in 14 games for Triple-A Ottawa in 2005.

Fasano allows Javy Lopez to come out from behind the plate and play first base or serve as the designated hitter with the Orioles missing two starting outfielders because of injuries.
