Counsell was placed on the disabled list with a broken rib.

After experiencing tightness in his right hamstring before Arizona's Thursday night game against San Francisco, Counsell was removed from the lineup and did not play. The Diamondbacks' shortstop will be re-evaluated Friday.

Diagnosed with a slightly torn labrum on March 1, Counsell returned to the field Thursday. The Arizona shortstop played catch, fielded grounders, hit off a tee and took 30 swings during batting practice. Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin told the East Valley Tribune that Counsell came through the workout pain-free. "He swung the bat very well," Melvin said.

Counsell has been diagnosed with a slightly torn labrum, which may force the Arizona infielder to miss some time during spring training. An MRI exam on Tuesday revealed the damage, and Counsell will receive a cortisone shot to counter the discomfort. He could be back on the field in about a week.

Counsell matched a career-high with five hits -- all singles -- in Sunday's win over the Colorado Rockies, going a perfect 5-for-5. The Diamondbacks' second baseman also scored three times and stole three bases. The last and only other time Counsell recorded five hits in a game was against the Dodgers on May 26, 2002.
