Jay Powell

7/29/2005

Two weeks after his return to the majors following Tommy John surgery last July, Powell suffered a serious elbow injury during Atlanta's win over Pittsburgh on Friday. The 33-year-old righthander sailed his second pitch of the night about 15 feet high and wide of the plate. He fell to the ground, holding his right elbow and writhing in pain. X-rays showed a severe elbow injury, Braves officials said.

The Atlanta Braves purchased Powell's contract from Double-A Mississippi on Friday, roughly a year after the veteran righthander underwent Tommy John surgery. After pitching well for Mississippi, the 33-year-old reliever will work out of the Atlanta bullpen.
