Darrell May

The Minnesota Twins released May over the weekend. The Twins were hoping that the left-hander would earn a spot in the bullpen, but he was roughed up by the Reds on Saturday and posted a 7.71 ERA in eight games this spring.

On Tuesday, the New York Yankees activated lefthander Felix Rodriguez from the disabled list and outrighted May to Triple-A Columbus. May was roughed up in two appearances with the Yankees. He allowed seven runs to Cleveland in a July 9 start that lasted 4.1 innings, and then coughed up six runs in a relief appearance against Boston on July 15. May heads to Columbus with an 0-1 record and 16.71 ERA with New York.

May, who was acquired from San Diego on Saturday, may make his first start for the New York Yankees this Saturday. If righthander Carl Pavano is not able to take his scheduled turn because of an ailing throwing shoulder, May is the leading candidate to get the call to start against Cleveland.

The San Diego Padres have reportedly traded May and fellow pitcher Tim Redding to the New York Yankees in exchange for Paul Quantrill. May is 1-3 with a 6.69 ERA in eight starts for the Padres. Both he and Redding are expected to report to the the Yankees' Triple-A team. The Padres will also send some money to the Yankees as part of the deal.

Both he and Redding are expected to report to the Yankees' Triple-A team in Columbus. The Padres also sent some cash to the Yankees as part of the deal.

With Woody Williams out for at least the next two weeks because of a strained muscle in his side, the San Diego Padres will turn to May to fill the void in the starting rotation. The veteran lefthander is scheduled to make his first start of the 2005 campaign on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

May was slated to serve as the Padres' fifth starter to begin the season, but the team decided to go with Tim Redding instead. May has made nine relief appearances so far this year, posting a 4.26 ERA, while striking out eight and walking five in 12.2 innings.
