John Wasdin

8/1/2006

Wasdin was designated for assignment on Monday after going 2-2 with a 5.10 ERA in nine games for the Rangers. The right-hander had struggled since his return from the disabled list on July 1.

The Rangers activated Wasdin from the 15-day disabled list Saturday to start against the Houston Astros.

Wasdin was released by the Texas Rangers after clearing waivers earlier in the week, but the Dallas Morning News is reporting that the 33-year-old right-hander may ink a minor league pact with the team. If he re-signs with the Rangers, he won't be able to return to the major league club until May 15 under rules of the collective bargaining agreement.

Wasdin has re-signed with the Texas Rangers, agreeing to a one-year, $600,000 contract. The 33-year-old right-hander appeared in 31 games with the Rangers last season, including six starts, going 3-2 with a 4.28 ERA and four saves. He also spent some time at Triple-A Oklahoma.

Wasdin, who has been solid in relief since he was recalled from the minors on June 12, is expected to start for Texas Tuesday in place of injured ace Kenny Rogers. The 32-year-old Wasdin has posted a 1.38 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP over 13 innings of relief work for the Rangers.

The Rangers purchased Wasdin's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma on Sunday. The veteran journeyman was working primarily as a starter for Oklahoma, where he had a 9-2 record and a 4.93 ERA. He was 2-4 with a 6.78 ERA in 15 appearances (10 starts) for Texas in 2004.
