Paul Byrd

12/5/2005

Bryd agreed to a two-year, $14.25 million contract Monday with the Cleveland Indians. The right-handed pitcher, who the Indians originally drafted in 1991, is set to make $7 million in 2006 and 2007, and faces a club option in 2008 that could raise the value to $22 million over three seasons. The 35-year-old Byrd was 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA in 31 starts for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last season.

Byrd, who experienced back spasms over the weekend during the Seattle series, will not make his scheduled start against Toronto on Tuesday. As a precaution, intended to give Byrd a couple more days of rest, rookie Joe Saunders will take Byrd's turn Tuesday. Byrd is 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA in 23 starts this season.

Originally scheduled to pitch Sunday, Byrd has seen his next start pushed back one day because of tightness in his triceps. The Angels' righthander is now scheduled to start Monday's game against the Texas Rangers. Ervin Santana will move up one day to make the Sunday start against the Florida Marlins.
