Giovanni Carrara

12/30/2005

The Pirates signed Carrara to a minor league deal on Thursday, and the veteran right-handed reliever will be with the team in spring training. The 38-year-old has played in parts of nine major league seasons with five different teams. He owns a career record of 29-17 with a 4.70 ERA in 288 appearances.

Carrara has been unable to pitch since straining his left hamstring trying to make a play in Tuesday's season opener. However, the Dodgers' righthander has improved over the past couple of days, and the club hopes to have his services available this weekend. He continues to be listed as day-to-day.

Carrara made 42 relief appearances last season, going 5-2 with a 2.18 ERA and two saves. He struck out 48 and walked 20 in 53.2 innings.
