Joe Borowski

12/30/2005

Borowski agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Marlins on Thursday. The former Cubs closer also has spent time with the Orioles, Braves, Yankees and Devil Rays in nine major league seasons. In 43 combined appearances for Chicago and Tampa Bay last season, the right-hander posted a 1-5 record and a 4.47 ERA. He also was 0-for-4 in save opportunities.

Looking for some bullpen help, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have signed Borowski, after the Chicago Cubs released him on Monday. The veteran righthander, who was designated for assignment by the Cubs late last month, has struggled this season, posting a 6.55 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He missed the first several weeks of the 2005 campaign while recovering from a broken bone in his wrist.

Opening a roster spot for starter Kerry Wood, the Chicago Cubs have designated Borowski for assignment. The 34-year-old reliever has struggled since returning to action after missing nearly two months of the season with a hairline non-displaced fracture in his right ulna. In 11 appearances, he posted a 6.55 ERA and allowed five home runs in 11 innings of work.

On Friday, the Chicago Cubs activated Borowski from the 15-day disabled list. The 34-year-old righthander, who was a success as the Cubs' closer in 2003 before shoulder woes limited him to 21.1 innings in 2004, missed the first seven weeks of the season with a hairline non-displaced fracture in his right ulna. He rejoins a Cubs pen that is in need of late-inning help.

Borowski has begun a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa, and if all goes well over the next several days, he could be activated from the 15-day disabled list as early as next week. The Cubs' righthander, who has been sidelined since suffering a hairline non-displaced fracture in his right ulna when he was hit by a comebacker during the last week of spring training, needed just 11 pitches to get through a one-inning relief appearance with Iowa on Wednesday.

Borowski struck out two batters in Wednesday's contest. He is scheduled to throw again on Thursday before being re-evaluated. Although he likely won't close games right away, Borowski should step into the role once he proves he is 100 percent. He was limited to 22 appearances by a shoulder injury last season, going 2-4 with an 8.02 ERA and nine saves.

Borowski tossed about 35 pain-free pitches off the mound as part of a simulated game prior to Wednesday's matchup with the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs' righthander, who has been sidelined since suffering a hairline non-displaced fracture in his right ulna when he was hit by a comebacker during the last week of spring training, continues to be ahead of schedule in his recovery and should go on a minor league rehab assignment in the near future.

Borowski still needs some time to get the strength back in his arm, but barring any setbacks, he should return to the Cubs' bullpen within the next couple of weeks. Although he likely won't close games right away, Borowski should step into the role once he proves he is 100 percent. He was limited to 22 appearances by a shoulder injury last season, going 2-4 with an 8.02 ERA and nine saves.

Borowski has been throwing fastballs off the mound the past couple of days, and barring any setbacks, he should be cleared to try some breaking pitches as early as this weekend. The Cubs' righthander has been sidelined since suffering a hairline non-displaced fracture in his right ulna when he was hit by a comebacker during the last week of spring training, but is ahead of schedule in his recovery. He could be ready for major league action in 2-3 weeks.

Borowski will throw a couple of simulated games before going on a minor league rehab assignment. The dates for those events are yet to be determined. Also to be decided is whether Borowski will reclaim the closer role, or if the Cubs will stick with LaTroy Hawkins. Borowski was limited to 22 appearances by a shoulder injury last season, going 2-4 with an 8.02 ERA and nine saves.
