Mariano Rivera

7/17/2006

Rivera tossed two scoreless innings Sunday to register his 400th career save in the Yankees' 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. "It's amazing, amazing to even think about it," Rivera said. "I've been blessed."

New York's Rivera was selected to his eighth All-Star team on Sunday as a relief pitcher for the American League. Rivera is 4-4 with a 1.84 ERA and 18 saves this season.

Rivera hurt his back early on Thursday and the Yankees said he likely wouldn't be available on Thursday against the Tigers. "He had one shoe on, and when he went to put the left shoe on, something spasmed," Torre said before Thursday's game against Detroit. "It's something new every day."

Rivera was unable to protect the Yankees' two-run lead in the ninth inning Saturday, snapping his streak of consecutive saves at 31. The Yankees did go on to beat the Texas Rangers in extra innings, however.

Rivera was unable to protect Yankees leads in the ninth inning for the second consecutive day, blowing the save in Tuesday's loss to the Boston Red Sox. The veteran closer, who gave up a game-tying homer to catcher Varitek on Monday, was touched for five runs -- one earned -- on three hits and three walks in just two-thirds of an inning. He was pulled in favor of Felix Rodriguez.

There's a chance that the elbow bursitis that Rivera battled in spring training could be a minor issue. He blew just four saves in 74 appearances last season, but gave up the lead three times in the playoffs, and his struggles have continued to start 2005.

Rivera was brought in to close out Tuesday's matchup against the Boston Red Sox, but the veteran righthander blew the save opportunity, allowing a game-tying home to catcher Jason Varitek in the ninth inning. Luckily for Rivera, Derek Jeter followed suit with a longball of his own in the bottom of the frame, notching the victory for the closer and the Yankees.

Rivera blew just four saves in 74 appearances last season, but gave up the lead three times in the playoffs. He missed some time this spring with bursitis in his elbow, but the ailment was not the cause of his minor struggles on Tuesday. He should get back on track in his next outing.
