Ron Mahay

8/11/2005

Mahay has cleared waivers and the Texas Rangers have assigned him to Double-A Frisco. The 34-year-old southpaw was 0-2 with a save and a 6.81 ERA in 30 relief appearances for the Rangers this season. His ineffectiveness and a $1.1 million contract next year kept him from being claimed at a time when many teams need lefthanded pitching.

Mahay was placed on outright waivers today. He made 30 appearances for the Rangers this year, posting a 6.81 ERA and nailing down one save.

On Thursday, the Texas Rangers recalled veteran Steve Karsay from Double-A Frisco and designated Mahay for assignment. The 34-year-old lefthander was 0-2 with a 6.81 ERA and a save in 30 relief appearances for the Rangers this season.

On Friday, the Texas Rangers activated Mahay from the disabled list, a little more than two weeks after he was sidelined by a groin strain. The veteran southpaw, who turns 34 on Tuesday, is 0-2 with an 8.38 ERA and one save in 19 appearances this season.

A little more than a week after going on the disabled list with a groin strain, Mahay started a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Oklahoma and worked a scoreless inning Thursday. The veteran southpaw, who turns 34 on June 28, should be ready to come off the DL when he is eligible late next week.

Nursing a strained groin, Mahay has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Texas Rangers. The reliever pitched fairly well over the first five weeks of the 2005 campaign, but in his last six outings, he has surrendered 13 runs in just 5.2 innings of work. Overall, Mahay is 0-2 with an 8.38 ERA and one save in 19 appearances this season.
